Are Ahm's Bowkers any good? Is there ways to improve the performance. Also, is $45 a good price for one thats like new with the orig. box?

I am working on a couple Bowker locomotives at the moment. (piecing them back together) There are 2 versions, one has the motor in the tender and one has it in the cab. I have the ones with the motor in the cab. Installing electrical pick ups and metal wheels to the tender and a little extra weight in the front of the boiler will improve their preformance. I guess $45 isn't a bad price if it is in perfect shape.

It has the tender drive, not in the boiler. Also, does it follow any particular prototype?

The Bowker was one of the Virginia and Truckee locomotives. http://aroundcarson.com/2007/01/25/californias_vt_engines The tender drive is the earlier version. They don't run bad but run better with the added electrical pickups.

| Its only real fault is that the cab is somewhat larger than HO scale, more like European OO which is 4mm to the foot instead of 3.5mm.

I've run both, a tender drive and a cab drive and the only difficulty I ever had was with the tender drive and the drive-shaft slipping on some turns probably too many cars in the consist, not sure. Other than that both configurations ran very well for me.
