Wrong part of the board, but...

The generic cars are Tyco. The Citations and Ford pickups are Life-Like.

lvrr325 Are you absolutely sure the Citations aren't Tyco? Tyco did make Citations after all. Some releases of the autorack were packaged with them.

The Tyco ones are 80s Mustangs. There are two Citations in the photo.

Tyco made a 1968 Camaro and AMX. When those became dated, they were replaced with the generic cars in the picture. The same cars also could be had in some US-1 sets with an auto hauler truck.

And they are generic, they really don't look like anything.

Only Life-Like made the 1980 Citation and 1978 Ford pickup. They use the same wheels and axles on the retro '53 Chevy and '56 Ford pickup that are still made now.

I hate to say this, lvrr325, but you have no idea what you're talking about here.

Tyco. Made. Chevy. Citation. IIs. I have six of them, from a Tyco autorack.

And, uh, take a look at pictures of a 1982 Ford Mustangs and see if you can still call those cars "Generic".

I would agree the Mustangs are modeled "generically" lol, to put it kindly - but there are enough styling cues carried over from the hood/grille and the side body molding to positively ID them in my mind, when put in context with the overall silhouette of the vehicle. The notchback roof styling was used by both the Mustang and the GM X-body cars (Citation and its corporate siblings like the Olds Omega, Pontiac Phoenix, etc), but that in itself was common for the time. No way to prove it though, I don't think they were ever ID'd as anything in particular on the box....so I'll leave it at that. Take a look at the originals and judge for yourself:

using the term generic may have been used for purposes of not paying royalties, make a few small changes,in length, roof height, etc, then call it what you want lol
ps the rear end of the generic is real ugly

My apologies.
Thanks for the links, Ken. That explains my Citations - Tyco apparently ordered some from LifeLike and sold them with its cars.

OK, gotcha. The memory fades sometimes.
Same car but they added the "II" to make people think it was a fresh model. Didn't work!

I had a 1983 Chevy Citation back in the day. It was a X-11 model. I loved it, but it was better equipped than the garden-variety Citation.

Me, and I get my first paycheck from my spring seasonal job (this job is the one time of year I have income that isn't just recycling money or birthday/Christmas money) next Sunday.

Gee, you'd think someone might consider that in the 30-odd years since the mid-1980s that a buyer could have simply swapped the wrong cars onto his Tyco autorack. I bought stuff today at an auction and AHM, Life-Like, Model Power and Tyco were all mixed together.

Anyhow, I had a 1984 Skylark about 10 years ago. Why? it was free. Idiot who had it had no clue how to fix brake lines. I spent maybe $200 on getting it into shape and I drove it a year or so. It was roomy inside and got me around, but leaked oil from the rear main seal and the computer controlled carburetor had a flat spot in it - which is a problem on all of them as close as I can tell. It even got me home one snowy night when I blew a rear tire and rounded off a lug trying to change it and couldn't find anyone to help me with it short of a tow. Even after it sat in a field three years and was partially flooded it still ran and would have moved was it not still sitting in mud even a 4x4 would slip in. I could see having another one, although I'd want to see if I could put a later fuel injection system in it.

Last post I read, Zelda was going to fashion some
kind of scale canvas cover for said automobiles
that he could use the actual automobiles for
some other purpose. Careful you don't spoil him.

Irv325, like I was saying...none the less I always
did like the Gremlin for reasons that defy logic.

That purpose, Chops, was to have HO automobiles free that already had window openings (unlike the JTT cars, my only other HO autos, which are cast with solid windows that I severely cut my left index finger while trying to carve out. Yay tendon damage x.x ) so that I could show people driving them or sitting in them at a drive-in theater.

Having learned the Tyco rack's basis (and having acquired a Gloor autorack kit with my latest round of recycling money when I went to blow it all at my LHS), I'm going to sideline it pending slight modification and the acquisition of some period autos for it.
