I believe the maker is AHM. The interior of the shell has me a bit confused. Is it possible
to graft an AHM chassis onto this as it stands?

Yes that's an AHM Alco C-424 is my memory is working. I also have one of those, regardless.
Your loco has a chassis, but it's missing the trucks and drivetrain. So I would say yes, you could swap in a complete replacement chassis with a drivetrain, or source the parts from one or two junkers....

Thank you. I don't know an Alco from a hole in my head,
so I appreciate the 411. Now is it just trucks that
fit into the shell, like a Tyco piece, or is it an entire
sub-chassis like a Model Power that would clip on?
Is the weight a separate piece?

If this is the design I think it is, you have both the body and the chassis there. The chassis is attached to the walkways, and the body snaps on to the top with hooked tabs.

The motor is a vertical type driving one truck, which fits into the large hole. If you can find a truck, these are very easy to remotor with a certain type of automotive can motor - I have some that I got once from Jameco - because the worm is a direct press fit on the motor shaft, and after removing the original armature and magnets, the motor tunnel is almost a drop-in fit for the can.

I have one that I did this way, which I will try and dig up to photograph for reference.

I'd like that. A simple DYI project is about my speed.

It was made in Austria by ROCO for sale by AHM. Only one truck was powered.

Hey Chops, I have this motorized truck that I think is an AHM. I am not sure if it is a rear or front motor. Maybe someone of the forum can identify it.

Well, that would be pretty fine. The hole in the rear
chassis seems a might small, so I reckon that
would be a front wheel drive. What would you
like in trade? I might be able to get it if not from
my own box, from one of several sources.

I think that truck is from an early AHM BL2. The C-424 that I have, has a single power truck, it is powered by a seperate mounted motor. I think some of the Roco units were sold by both Atlas & AHM.

Looking around, because I was in Pgh over the weekend and had no time to photo, I found out that TankedEngine of this very forum had already done the same upgrade on a later-model AHM RS2, Mehano-production, which uses a very similar motor setup. TE's method is exactly the same as mine:

We could really use a remotoring / project database here.
