I have the following Tyco HO engine Shifter II Santa Fe Model 238C:1600 Year 1971-1972 0-4-0 & Tender that have not been run very much. However, it runs but runs very slow and poorly. I need to clean and oil this engine. Would someone please advise me on how to service this engine? Also, how to remove the body if I need to clean and oil gears and bearings inside the body. Any other advice on maintenance would be greatly appreciated.

Thank You
Dave

There's not much to a shifter, so this is fairly simple.

-Keep the wheels clean.
-There should be very tiny droplet of oil in the bearings on the tender to keep the axle ends and the sideframes from corroding.
-The surface where the tender truck bolsters touch the under frame should also be kept clean and free of corrosion.
-A little gear grease on the worm and gear and on the driver axles is good. I use LaBelle 106.
-A tiny bit of light oil on the motor bearings is good. Don't have enough that it can creep onto the commutator.
-The brushes and commutator should be kept fairly clean. This is pretty low maintenance. It only needs doing if the commutators look black and dirty.

To take the shell off, you remove a screw that comes up from the bottom directly under the smoke stack. Kind of hold things together. If the cylinder saddle falls off the frame, it's tedious getting the crosshead guides back into place.

The rear of the body is held down by some little tabs that drop into slots under the firebox and slide backward to hook under part of the frame.

If you don't know the background of this engine, it may have been over lubricated by previous owners. It is advisable to clean out all old grease from gears/worms as it may have thickened/hardened and this is causing your poor performance. Relube sparingly - more is not better.
