These locomotives were built by Baldwin and other American locomotive builders for shipment over to Europe before and during WW1. When we entered this war the USRA was formed to oversee railroad needs here. Locomotives awaiting export were leased to railroads here to alive equipment shortages here. This is one of the Locomotives leased the CRR of NJ at this time.

Nice engine! I got one not long ago. Surprisingly the tender floor held up but not the gear box top. I'll fabricate a new floor some day.

These 2-8-0 locomotives of French design not yet delivered were immediately leased, on a short term basis as standard USRA designs were being accepted and construction started. From records keep by the CRR of NJ a list of which locomotives were leased to this railroad is. There were 10, all Baldwin built. Three built on February 1918 were numbers 484, 485, and 486. The remaining seven were completed on December 1917. These were numbered, 660, to 666.
* This covers the French type 2-8-0 types leased to the CRR of NJ.
* A photo of USA 663 is in our photo archive.

Here 663 can be seen getting coal.

* WW1 for many railroads was a busy time, and the demands on the railroads only became greater. These first leased locomotives, these 2-8-0 types of French design, were a quick fix and not meant for a long term lease. A large number of 2-10-0 locomotives, over 200, ordered by Russia sat completed awaiting shipment to a country that no longer existed. Because of nonpayment of orders already delivered to this new Communist country, delivery had been stopped. The USRA now looked to these 2-10-0 types to provide more power once ready for US railroads. When built they were made for 5' gauge tracks, and a form of link pin couplers. So something had to be done with the track gauge, couplers, and front pilot.

Nice loco. I can see the French influence on the design - it's got an integral running plate, unlike the stuck-on-the-boiler walkways of US-designed locos.

Speaking of the USRA, they also designed an 0-8-0 heavy switcher that seems to have been the basis for the Tyco eight-coupled steam locos (Though they wear a different tender).

* There was no USRA when these 2-8-0 were ordered and completed. They just weren't shipped yet to France. Then we went to war and almost eminently the rail traffic increased. They were a short term measure till other locos could be made ready for leasing. Namely the 200 plus Russian decapods. By the time the first decapods were ready to lease, the USRA had already decided what style of each wheel arrangement would be produced and who would do it. The Russian decapod like the French 2-8-0 weren't chosen to be USRA style locomotives. None were built for the war use here at home. A different design 0-6-0t, 0-8-0, 2-8-0, also not USRA designed were built in large numbers and shipped wherever we were fighting to move war supplies.
