Hey fellas:
Can anyone who's dropped a Tyco body shell on another manufacturers chassis pipe up witha little missive on what there experiences were.
Would you repeat it? I've been playing with doing a PT repower for a while now off & on and I keep coming back to the idea that the effort isn't worth it in most cases. For example; Stewart makes a High-Hood Alco C-630 that runs great, so why repower a Tyco. I think Atlas makes an Alco 424/5 and a 430? Same goes for an SD-24 etc., etc. Sharks; E-R (Roco),
So that brings us back to repowering for fun!? Repowering offes one neat thing. If I can repower a PT truck it allows uniquely Tyco trucks to be used. In a weird sort of way there something cool about "Vampire" trucks don't you think?
Anyway, I'd appreciate stories about conversions, and experiences...

| Someone here already stuck a Tyco Shell on a Stewart unit as you mentioned. As I recall there was little effort involved in the bash.

Look for my topic on repowering a Shark with an Athearn F-unit. Was relatively simple; more than a swap-and-drop but not by much; you do need a grinder to mill part of the F-unit frame.
And you don't have to sacrifice an expensive Stewart or Atlas either. Shoot, Athearn Fs might be the only other locos as "worthless" as Tyco PTs and Kader drives.... only because there's about 21239698000 of them out there.

I read that post of yours a while back. It got me to thinking about using a Hobbytown Chassis with one of them big honking DC-91's in it!
Didn't you also post about doing a double engine MU or PT Shark?

Hmm... I recall a discussion about dual-motor locos, but vaguely.
I think maybe Brian tried it, and I know that Tyco did offer dual-MU2 powered locos at one time. I think you wire the motors in series, is all. Supposedly not hard to do but I have not tried it myself.

...take one dead 1776/1976 TYCO commemorative body and ALCO 630 chassi apart... throw away dead chassi... Obtain one Athearn U30C chassi off of Milwaukee Road shell, place U30C chassi into/beneath TYCO...
Re-apply Locomotive transplant onto rails, increase throttle... continue to have fun as "New-Life" 1776/1976 ALCO 630 locomotive kicks major donkey of all other TYCO units. In other words, just short of perfect fit, it Rides Again, beautifully.
...oh, with Milwaukee Road shell... Chop shell just behind exhaust stack and just in front of rear top vents... Match length of remaining body (fore/aft) onto Athearn Hustler chassi... glue ends together and you have a new unit...
I called it the "Dash four U 2 B" Dash: as in the speed of this unit via rubber band Four: as in the count of wheels U: as in "U-Boat" 2: as in two axles B: as in a "B truck"
Blending not required... Scoot this baby around the layout... hmmm, speedy... rather a PT boat than a "u-boat" eh?
now, with the Hustler shell... ... ZZZzzz[:D]
I don't have a one track mind. It depends on the turn-out. "I love your catenary!" Is that a power-trip or just another pick-up line?
