Diesel works but the gear rod is missing Any thoughts?

Those drives were prone to split axle gears.
Also, not the quietest.
I did find that if one wanted to fix one up, Bachmann axles,
if you can believe it, are a good replacement!!
These are the old first-gen HO axles, like so:

You must trim the black inside wheel hub flush, and they work fine.
Individual results may vary.
