My LOTW is a Proto 1000 RDC, as well. I got this guy for $20 and it runs really well.

All those heavy electrics featured in the past few weeks of the TF left me craving anything with a pantograph. I was ready to paste a set to the roof of a Super Chief box car, when this little honey showed up in the bottom of a cardboard box at the model train estate sale. This old Hobbytown E33 has a honkin' big motor and with just a little cleaning and lube, she runs like a champ. Had to remove the old Kadee couplers that had the vertical stantion instead of a curved faux air hose to make room for the old reliable horn hooks. Twenty five clams. I intend to strip it and paint it for Conrail. I'm into blue these days.

I've seen an Athearn one of those online before, but never a Hobbytown version. Very interesting.

I finally got a new locomotive I've been wanting for some time now...
Yep, an Amtrak P42 Genesis locomotive! It's an Athearn ready-to-run model, and it's in Phase 3, as that's my favorite Amtrak paint scheme (I remember seeing a few Genesis locomotives painted this way in Boston when I was a kid, but now I mostly see them in Phase V...)
Breaking it in on my break-in Power-Loc track loop...
Here it is pulling my TYCO and Life-Like Amtrak cars! I also just ordered a TCS T1 decoder to install into it, as this locomotive is DCC-ready. (I've had good luck with the TCS decoders so far...)

Interesting you mention that. The shell reminds me of every Athearn product I ever did see, the side frames look like stock Athearn, but the motor is this big old thing and the drive is a bulky looking thing with big bumps to accommodate the axle gears, but there are no manufacturer's label to be found. We associated the big motor and big drive train to Hobbytown, probably need to post this up in ID Station.

Hobbytown was famous for using the Pittman DC 90/91 open frame motors in their kits. I have an E-7 A/B units and they both have the DC91 motors. Suckers are big enough to haul a house around the track.

Chops
What you have is a Hobbytown 380K drive unit with an Athearn Virginian E33 shell mounted on it.

My LOTW this week is a Royal Blue: I'm thinking to repower it with an Athearn SW7 chassis. (Has anyone done this?) Could use some guidance since this will likely be my first repower

Some one used a GE 44 tonner by Bachmann.

I think some one has already. In my copy of the Fiddletown and Copperoplois Railroad book, The daring experimental locomotive designed by Mr. Forney Hobbs may have done such a thing. On second though upon referencing the sight of the locomotive being tested, Maybe not. frank

I have done both the SW-7 chassis and the 44 Tonner. The SW-7 is much easier to come by but is a tight fit.The 44 Tonner comes in two varieties. One earlier version has two motors and can be a tad finicky. The later version uses one motor and gear towers more similar to the traditional Athearn layout. The 44 ton chassis almost seems to have been made for the Tyco tender. The trucks are a nice fit as well and somewhat resemble those on some steam locomotives. The SW-7 trucks are longer but they still fit. There are pros and cons to both but overall if you can find a good running one used I prefer the 44 Tonner for these conversions. I'm also working on an old Roundhouse Boxcab that is getting a 44 Tonner chassis.
