I have an opportunity to buy a MDC Roundhouse 2 truck Shay kit. It's unbuilt mint. I've been told there is serious gears and gear box issues. Been told the only remedy is buy the NWSL parts. Is it worthwhile building with the stock parts? And what's the hardest part of assembly?

These can be built to run very well, but you have to take your time and be very meticulous in your work. As the kit comes, out of the box, there are many areas that require removal of casting flash. The interior of the gearbox is one area. NWSL gears will not fix this. The main problem with these units is getting the drive gears to mesh in sinc and can take a lot of tinkering. I have one assembled and it runs to my satisfaction but took a lot of fiddling and fussing to get it so. If you enjoy a challenge, I would say go for it. There is a ton of info on the web about fine tunig these units and if you decide to get it, email me and I will send you links and info that I have collected.

If you can find an affordable copy, get the MDC Shay Handbook by Jeff Johnston. It has a wealth of information on how to build the kit.

"Affordable" and "MDC Shay Handbook" just do not go together in the same sentence.
