This is an engine that my brother bought a while ago.

Can anyone tell me who makes this and when it was made? I'm also trying to get it running so here are some pics of the inside. The motor works but I don't know how to make the wheels turn. Weirdest drive I've seen...
The motor is in the middle and has two metal rods coming out of either side that turn. When I first opened it up there was an elastic band on either end running from the rod to the wheel axle. The elastics were too big so I put on some smaller ones, but these ones were too small.

Hi Cheez:
It's an Athearn Hi-F (Rubber Band drive belt) EMD GP-7/9 in ATSF Paint.
Rubber drive bands go around the drums between the wheels get turned 90 degrees and put over motor shafts! Didn't you ever have an Athern Hustler!? Boy you are young. A hustler was a rite of passage once upon an HO RRer's young life!, can I get the Choir to sing an AMEN!!!!![:D] [:D] [:D] [:D] [:D]
I think they were made between mid-50's through mid-60's if I remember.
Hope that helps!?

Looks like your brother picked up an old Athearn Hi-F drive GP7. ATSF 2685 was initially released around 1957. It was released at that time with both the Hi-F drive as well as with the now standard geared drive. Both drives shared the same shell and road numbers. I do not know when the Hi-F drive was dropped, but the motor was changed in 1964.
If the motor works well, you will just have to experiment and find rubber bands that will fit well. The design of the chassie will not allow you to install the GP7 geared trucks.

Gareth and Hypoponera:
Thanx. I've tried some dental elastics but they were too tight. The ones that were on there when he got it were too loose. Should there be 1 elastic around each axle?
And no I've never seen one of these before. There aren't many train shows in Ottawa, so I don't get many chances to find old trains like these. And when I do go to trainshows, I focus on Tyco since thats what I collect. Alot of my trains are kinda like eye candy, so something like this wouldn't really stand out as much to me.

Here's a how-to article on rebuilding the Hi-F drive. http://2guyzandsumtrains.com/Content/pa=showpage/pid=75.html

| Ahhh...ye olde HI-F drive...I have the Athearn RDC with that drive in it. Runs quite well actually, properly throttled up and down, it doesn't bounce and slows to a nice crawl when asked.

I'll do some experimenting to try and find good elastics. Has anyone ever replaced elastics on these before and could tell me where I could get sets of elastics the same size? I have plenty of rubber bands, but they are all either too big, too small or I only have 1 of them.

Hey Ted. I'm guessing you mean the ones that are used on braces. What size did you use?
