Mike - I have come across some generalized guides for Tyco on the web, but nothing specialized to the category of their Spirit of 76 trains. In the end they are worth what someone will pay - so I tend to research ebay and see what things sell for there (not necessarily what is being asked, but the final sale price). Of course ebay is generally much higher than what you'll find at train shows.

Hi Jerry Yes I watched e-bay and the prices are erratic. I have a good collection of the spirit of 76 trains. There's is two in Particular that I am looking for. It is the Early Version of the Tyco bicentennial Box car. One is all blue and the other all red. I have only seen them on ebay twice. The last time the seller wanted $89 a piece for them. I am trying to find out what kind of value they have. I don't want to pay an arm and a leg for them, but without these two versions I fell my collection is incomplete.

My favorite from the Spirit of 76 lineup is the Rodgers 4-6-0. I just love the looks of it.

I found this link http://www.ebay.com/gds/TYCO-Brownbox-Trains-/10000000175933943/g.html which was interesting, but only one line about the Spirit of 76 trains. According to the author, sets are worth "$85-$100".
I would ask, what is it worth to complete your collection? If you are finding prices to be pretty erratic, there may not in fact be a "true worth" established that you could rely on if you decided to sell at any point.
It's confounding though, to try to gauge value off ebay. Not just Spirit of 76 but anything and everything. I think most sellers inflate the prices in hopes they will find that one collector that needs that one item and will pay the price to get it done.

oh I should mention that I am trying to get a USA Express loco no need for caboose since the caboose was a generic red with 2 white stripes on it but would be cool to get one custom made USA Express
