I'm getting ready to remotor a pair of steam engines and need to press on the worm gear. I was wondering what's the best way? I lack a puller. I have a vise. I don't wanna destroy the motor in the process.

I would strongly suggest using the right tool.

Back in the olden daze...we'd freeze the shaft and heat up the gear. The resulting shrinkage from freezing and expansion from heating usually gave enough thousandths of an inch to tap it into place.

I was thinking that myself Bob. Did it with bearings on some power train equipment on helicopters in the Army. Freeze the bearing and use a heat gun on the component.
