GG-1: I know what you mean. I was browsing "sharknose HO" last night, pulled up several similar examples. One in particular was a very common 80s Bachmann ABA set (pancake drive and all). In great shape, in their original boxes but priced at $300-$400+. My theory is that these sellers are patient, and trolling the waters for that special buyer - someone with deep pockets who has been looking for that one special piece and damn the cost...or someone who is looking for nostalgia (antiques) and really has no idea of the value but has the money. Email scammers send out millions of emails, knowing they don't have to hit many, even one good return will make it worthwhile. The sellers have decent feedback history too, so it's not like they haven't had experience selling.

Remember, for quite a few antiques pickers, "old toy trains" are ALWAYS "worth tons of money" to a "collector".

Except for the classic TV Pickers show where they bought on precisely that premise...and lost their hindquarters. And I laughed...and laughed..and laughed.

Yes, obviously Sellers trolling for naive marks who know nothing of the market value. And since I've worked at a model train shop for over a year now, I can say that the market value of trains is HIGHLY selective, and VERY specific to certain pieces, condition, completeness, etc. While many things operate on a bell-shaped curve, O gauge Lionel is NOT one of them, the prices are high if the piece is A) mint, and B) has a mint box with it. Once you get past the Condition 9.x , it's a steep decline in what collectors and operators are willing to pay, as it costs SO much to restore a Lionel train piece, if it's not mint, it's usually not worth "just under mint" prices. A condition 9 engine with mint box might sell for $500 or more, but if it has no box, has some slight wear and paint dings, and is only a 7+, you may have a hard time selling it for $150. It just seems to be the way the Lionel collector thinks and operates. Not mint? Worse than lint. I've seen stuff at train shows priced at $80 that my boss wouldn't pay 20 for. It's ALL about condition with the Lionel guys. Even HO has it's picky purists, boxcar missing a stirrup, value just got slashed in half. Most are willing to pay for a mint piece, and NOT willing to pay for anything less than near perfect. Seen it time and again since working at the hobby shop. People trying to sell their estate trains, get a bit mad when the boss only offers them a fraction of what "they" think it's worth. It costs time and money to repair couplers, roller contacts, and other pieces, which cuts into profits due to time spent doing maintenance on worn-out or heavily-used equipment. He WILL pay reasonably good money for mint trains, but once it's under C9, there is no gold in them there trains. . Just a voice of experience watching what the boss buys and sells for the past year or so.

There are folks with brand new, recent release HO stuff posted with much more than MSRP prices on them, too. Folks with say a Bowser sound C636 showing a $440 price "discounted" to $330 - I ordered them myself, list is 299.99. I saw the same when I checked out Atlas U30Bs that were run in 2013. I don't get it because if I want that specific thing and I search for it, I find it cheaper easily.

I know! Not to mention, you can get a lot of the things shown here for super cheap compared to these prices just as easily.

there's no way the post office set should go for $100! even if the box was pristine there's no way. I think I got mine for $34 and it was near mint and I was happy with that. I mainly see them on ebay for around 40 to 50 dollars.
