Sounds like one of the cheap Pikemaster sets with a Casey Jones loco from the early 60's. The loco is extremely common and still only bring about $20 in excellent condition. Unless there's a rare car in the set, it may be over valued at $75.

The lead truck is still there, it's just hanging toward the bottom of the box. You'd have to check with guys on one of the S scale lists on Yahoo to find out if it's a bargain. The Pikemaster track is in good shape.
My father gave my sister The Game Train when she was little, which was the same 21165 loco and a few cars. There was a game mat that you laid the track on, but I don't know how it was played. The mat and game pieces were long gone by the time I was around, but we still had the rest of the set including that transformer.

I'm a American Flyer collector myself in S and HO . That's way too much on the price. The later PikemasPikemaster isn't very desirable. Cheap stuff and a effort to try and save the AC Gilbert company.

Yup... I saw a complete Pikemaster set go for about $55 not long ago. They could have become collectible despite being cheaply made, but the guy who cleaned out the AC Gilbert factory ended up with literal tons of this plastic Pikemaster stuff, so the market is flooded. They are hardly rare.

I used to collect AF/"S" gauge, but it got too expensive for me. That is why I moved into HO a few years ago....

Seriously? That's actually quite pathetic, really. That just tells me they were awful because, well, nobody wanted them.Does it even work, Microbusss?

There's lots of stuff that was complete junk in its day that is valuable now, like that gawdawful HO F2 (I think) that AF produced in their last few years that's gone through the roof. A company's worst misstep can become the most sought after rarity.
The Casey Jones S stuff is just common, and that kills any demand. They ran well enough and were reliable. If only a small number had survived, Boomers would probably be forking over big bucks to get them back.

But you can definitely tell from that set that AC was in it's "dark ages" if you will. But if I ever see a complete set working, I may actually pick it up for a Christmas tree layout.

No question, Gilbert's son had the company circling the drain at that point. Keep your eye out for the 21168 Casey Jones. It has smoke, chug, & headlight, plus actual side rods and crossheads, and throws out a ridiculous amount of smoke!

Okay. I've definitely seen these things around, though. With or without track, freight cars, etc.

I had a small AF "S" Gauge layout set up years ago. I had a 322 NYCwith a smoke unit in the tender. I made some smoke fluid using a mixture of 3-1 oil, kerosene and some Pine Sol for a nice smell. The fluid worked really well leaving a thick haze of smoke around the track and nearly setting off the smoke alarm in the basement.
