Hi All!
Does anyone have a copy of the Model Railroader issue, Volume 39, Number 10, October 1972?

I was looking over some of my engine photos today and I was curious, so I did a google search for The Interlake Vulcanian Railroad and I found it was featured in that issue. I was surprised to find I happen to own a couple engines with that fictitious railway roadname & identical emblem and was hoping maybe I could take a look at the pictures form the magazine to see if what I have is featured in the article.

Here are the engines themselves:

Any information anyone can provide will be very graciously received!
Thanks!

Sean

Interlake Vulcanian, yes. A beautiful model railroad - if I haven't said that to you before, I said it to someone when some ten wheelers were posted here .

I believe I have that issue. I know I have an issue with a layout feature on the I-V. I also know it will take me some time to find it (probably days or more) so stay tuned. :)

I searched the name of the railroad and found some pictures of the layout. Looks pretty dang good. In fact, I could look at it all day if I was there. Those locomotives are a very interesting piece of model railroading history in my book.

that do?

I think that'll do until I get my hands on the actual magazine! Thanks!

The article only has photos of a few Great Northern locos.
I wonder if there was another follow-up in a later issue.
Or someone just liked the name.

There's a copy on Ebay right now, not too expensive.

I see MR magazines at train shows for .25 or .50 cents all the time. If I can remember to do it I'll pick up a copy.

No point in buying a copy.
Only three pages.

It turns out that there was a return visit. November 1981 MR - after finding the description of that issue in an online index, I think that is actually the one I have. I'll try and find it.

There are also some other color photos here:
http://mendotarailmuseum.tripod.com/id29.html

It seems it wasn't you whom I sent to that page last time, it was Retired_Alex who had *also* picked up a couple of I-V engines.

MT:

I found a sister loco to your 1874 - it's numbered 1872 in the photo below. Behind it is a loco of the same class, but with a lighter-colored smokebox. I think that might be your 1872. Arrow added:

Edit: On the other hand, those might be numbered 13xx, and the front loco is of course painted for GN. I scanned the whole article and will try and get some more photos up.

Nov '81 MR, p. 70

At the very least it is a loco of the same class.
This is like historical-society level of digging here...

That's awesome how one of those engines you have there might've been in a model railroader magazine.

Now that's just too cool! It all makes me wonder what happened to the rest of the locomotives? I wonder how many others chose to not change them, but rather preserve them. I chose to not sell them and keep them all together because of how well detailed each one was. I have a couple rail lines that I have collected. This is the only one I know of that was featured in a magazine. Pretty cool!

Thanks guys!

I know Retired_Alex on here has two, and apparently some equipment went to a local museum.

Looking at the photo again, I'm now thinking my ID was overly hasty. Those are clearly light, pre-USRA pacifics, like your 1874, but the dome spacing is different, and the loco in front has a Delta trailing truck. The trailing truck on yours could well be a recent replacement (it isn't painted) but the dome situation is more problematic, unless this loco was rebuilt when it acquired I-V paint.

I'll look a little more closely at the other photos I scanned.

It would be interesting to see Alex's stuff too and if anyone ever visits the museum to take some pictures of what they have.

Not a problem here. Just knowing they were once placed and ran on such a magnificent model railroad makes all the difference to me anyway.
