Do you like lichen? If you do, get thee to Dollar Tree. They've got bags of it, treated, green-dyed, and marked 'reindeer moss'. 24 cubic inches per bag. They've also got bags of floral moss, which makes nice vines and undergrowth. I like to mix the two with other synthetic and natural materials to make the typical northeastern fields of thickets and shrubberies. Ni.

In addition, Dollar Tree has small craft paint-sized bottles of Mod Podge (Edit: which apparently are not acrylic matte/gloss medium but can be used in similar ways), and bags of brightly colored green sand that would almost make nice shiny grass to complement nice shiny colorful buildings. Not quite the vintage appeal of sawdust but maybe close. There's also sand that is a bit too brown to be coal, but might work as some sort of random ore or crushed slag.

Price for any of these is $1 of course. :)

(Edit: Apparently Mod Podge is acrylic medium's low-budget cousin, but the gloss kind shined up my little plaster river pretty well yesterday. :) )

The +tax was almost a dealbreaker. Almost, buss. Almost.

Fortunately I was able to sell 12 of my 17 mint-condition Aerotrains to cover the (fnord).

Also, it pays to be somewhat selective, and to look at the back of the bag, if you're looking for lichen. I bought 3 bags from my LDT and discovered that a lot of the lichen within was shredded into small pieces. It wasn't a problem for me, as I was going to tear it into small bits anyway for ground cover, but it could be inconvenient for lichenball hillsides. For some reason the smallest fragments were at the back of hte bag. I suspect they are stacked in a case with the label side up.
