I have a friend who would like a train set like his father had when he was young.

Here is a bad picture of the set. Even pieces would be helpful.

I know a member who got one od those diesels on Saturday in silver. That is the hard thing to get. The flats with tanks not so hard. the caboose, not hard at all. Just you may not get a road name you want. You painted in a color you want.

Yes...the diesel is the hard part, everything else is fairly easy to find. They run pretty good for their size too....

The Army Diesel shows up on ebay from time to time. They sell for around a $150 in very good condition.

Yup, I got a silver one on Saturday for $5. Needs some work, and it's missing steps as most of them are. The plastic frames were quite brittle, which is probably why few survived. I have it apart as we speak.

That guy needs his head examined! That engine is not worth $40! in the condition it is in!

I have sold approx 20+ of these over the past 10 years and $150 is absolute top $!!!

I just picked one up tonight and I think the only damage is the missing rear horn:

This engine is an excellent parts engine for the A DA/R or A A/R (and the ABL A-R "Little Shoo" for that matter) and it is fairly common because it is not popular. It dates from about the same time period. The motor/gearing is a perfect match and the drivers are almost perfect. The rods are different and longer however.

The drivers are a good match as well. One common problem I have encountered on maybe half of the engines I have had pass through is a stripped driver due to the plastic cracking on the steel axle. The axle that usually cracks i the rear geared one. The only difference in the spoked wheels is this... The front driver on the DA/R is identical to both front and rear drivers on the CRR of NJ, but the rear driver has a slightly larger counter weight on the DA/R. Once on however, it looks almost prefect and only the trained/experience eye like mine sees it.

The ABL A-R "Little Shoo" is the most rare and valuable of the engines however. Here is what one looks like. You will see the lead driver has a larger counterweight:

I've been watching that army version get relisted 4 or 5 times. I guess the seller is hoping for a sucker.

Here's a recent auction for the Little Shoo with all the original packaging. It's missing one step, but I thought it would go for more. I've seen them go higher in much worse shape.

Guys,
I think at this point, I will leave this alone. The value of this type engine is a lot more than expected.

Thanks for all the information.

It was listed in O scale Lionel Nelson. That's why. I would bid otherwise. Those rarely sell for less than $150. With the box, I've seen them top $200.

Sean, I don't think I even noticed the O scale category, so it must have been my O scale Rivarossi search that nabbed it. I was going to bid if it didn't go too high, but completely forgot about it with the holiday & such.

Looks like the original post was a guy looking for parts or a whole train to remember his father. Sean, why don't you give the guy the locomotive that you got the other night instead of showing and telling how many you have had through the years.

Eric,
I have contacted Sean. The item has become a collector's item. The engine is worth more than a $100. Would you give me an item worth that much. I will not pay that for my friend to have the engine. It is all OK.

Hello Eric,
The point of the showing was to show that they are out there, you just have to be willing to look. I buy and sell to enhance my collection, restore my Mustang and pay for my daughters' ice hockey lessons. I, as you I am sure, can ill-afford to hand over to someone I do not know anything of such value. Are you telling me, if you had one and you knew it was worth approx ~$100 or more, you would be willing to just hand it over? It is not that I am against helping people out. several years ago, I was selling my Hotwheels collection at a flee market. A boy of about 10-11 came up to my table and his eyes grew huge when he saw I have the 67 Camaro Treasure Hunt. Yes, the very first one. He called his dad over and was jumping up and down smiling and pointing as he did it. He asked me how much I wanted. I told him $20! He bought it and I bet to this day he is happy! I am happy because it was a kid's toy that went to a kid. Here is what they are going for:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/RARE-VINTAGE1995-HOT-WHEELS-TREASURE-HUNT-SERIES-3-12-67-CAMARO-NEW-ON-CARD-/201230413750?pt=Diecast_Vehicles&hash=item2eda446fb6

Yes... $500! And I do not regret selling it to a kid for $20!

The other members posted links to a few eBay listings where the sellers are asking inflated prices for items which are in fair to average condition. The one I have is in above average condition. The point of telling how many I have had and sold for, was also to prove they are out there and to enforce my point that the current ones being offered for sale are way over priced.

Wait, I thought this was the trading post section of the forum, Not the show everyone what I got and how many I have bought or sold in the past section. I am on ebay as well and regularly buy Bowser, Pennline, Kato and Broadway Limited. I am also deep into Lionel Post War trains. I am guessing you did not pay $500.00 for the lot that the locomotive in question came in. And as for it being worth $100.00, no way. It has no box, it is missing a horn and is used. No one in their right mind would pay top dollar for it. If you insist on making money off the locomotive sell it to him for like $5.00 and wish him some happy memories. I sell things to people at discounted prices all the time. It is not how I make my living, it is a hobby.

Eric & Tom,
My value was based on the units on eBay, not on anything from Sean. An items value is not based on what an individual has paid, but what another individual will pay. They call that the free market system. I have not asked for or even want charity. The postings by individuals here have educated me about these items. I will look for a bargain, but the engine is out of the range of what I am willing to pay. I will not hold Sean in any kind of negitive light, because he knows what he is doing, a then does it. If you would like you can buy one of the engines on eBay and send it to me to prove how kind hearted you are.

Your buying account is even funnier:

LOL! That's classic tom! At least I do all my buying and selling on the same account. I don't try to fool anyone into thinking I don't buy anything on eBay and all I do is sell! That seems a bit dishonest and shady if you ask me.

It is a shame such a well intended post of trying to find something precious and rare for a friend turned into an attack on a fellow member/frequent contributor by two very in-frequent and/or non-contributors.

Kinda sad.

John. I am very sorry this happened to such a well intended post.

Sean, I mentioned what I collect in maybe three or four posts, you seem to mention what you collect in every post, as well as what you do in your personal life, and to a new member it just seems like you want to show everyone that you have the most trains, and are better than everyone else. That may have not been your intention, but that is how you seem to be representing yourself.

Please give it a rest. It is actually kind of pathetically funny now. Not sure why you seem to have a need to start something with me? ..or why?, but my interest in finding out has long since past.

Please, for everyone's sake here... if you have anything more to say about me, either start a new topic with the sole purpose of ripping me a new one or just send me private messages. I can take it... I am actually begging you now. Stop.

If you do start a topic thread, I'd be happy to see it. I promise you and I won't even resort to name calling back. I'll refuse to do it. You an Tom can chime in all you like. Fill it till your hear's desire!

But really... give it a rest on this thread because it has driven this way off topic.

Sean

Congrats all on the first flame war I ever saw on this forum.
Now let's never do that again.
I seem to recall a thread several months ago where everyone was saying how happy they are that this is the one forum where noone ever really argues. So unless you have something relevant or useful, let it drop.

My last post on the topic. Only because I have to respond to Sean's insult of dishonesty and shadiness. You all can decide for yourself, please read.
My first post about your pricing. I have been to train shows with you where you don't price your stuff, when people inquire you said, "What do you want to pay for it?" Sean, you are selling it, give them a price.

To start, I do sell on Ebay, no mystery, I do have two accounts, one I buy under and one I sell. Nothing wrong with that or dishonest or shady. I make no reference to where I get my inventory in my listings. If I stated I got my stuff from yard sales, estate sales, my runaway uncle or father who passed and had a large collection when in fact I bought it on Ebay, then you are correct Sean, that is dishonest.

Let's talk about this Sean. On September 2 at 9:46am LOTW you posted this picture of the nice lot you won on a buy it now.
http://www.tycoforums.com/tyco/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=15211

What is real interesting is items very similar to those in the photo started showing up on Ebay. Check out these listings on Ebay on what I think is Sean's wife's Ebay account. tdkrietzer Your wife's maiden name. Maybe coincidence, who knows, I doubt it.

Here is the Atlantic http://www.ebay.com/itm/RARE-VINTAGE-HO-BRASS-PREWAR-1939-MANTUA-4-4-2-ATLANTIC-STEAM-LOCOMOTIVE-ENGINE-/181538786376?nma=true&si=EC26Q1OQ%252Fkm9MoZe95P3DEzMwI8%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557

You can check the feedback to see the rest of the listings and to see how similar his listings are on his 69mustang4me Ebay page and this one. Here is a current listing, check out the similarity under the "PLEASE READ" in the description. http://www.ebay.com/itm/12-VINTAGE-ULRICH-HOPPER-CAR-REPLACEMENT-INNER-BRACES-DIECAST-NEW-PARTS-/371196464872?pt=Model_RR_Trains&hash=item566d088ee8
New Kensington, ice hockey, shipping issues, you know the rest. An you call me shady and dishonest?

Now let's get more of the dishonesty, and shadiness, and deceit on your part. Why would you claim this was from your father's collection? You know nothing about trains? Really? You can't test them? Really? What do you have to hide Sean? I am sure you have good reasons. I don't want to hear them. This will probably get me removed from the forum, oh well. I had to defend my integrity. I will say no more on the subject.

Hallelujah. As has been posted before, if you and whoever have a bone to pick with Sean, go pick it in private. Personally I have zero interest in reading anything you have to post, you ditched any credibility you had by turning this thread into your personal attack forum.
Other than that, there's really nothing more to be said.

My best advice to anyone else here would be to "stop feeding the trolls."

I just came home to find this post after taking my two daughters to first.. my oldest daughter's 5:30-6:30 middle school ice hockey game, then 7:30-8:30 girls ice hockey practice for both, then public skating from 8:30 to 10:00pm. Then to Kings Family restaurant for ice cream / breakfast food with them and a couple other girls and parents from their team.

Tom, I wish I could say I am surprised by your willingness to attach me, but please feel free. I wish you would have just started a new thread however. I didn't read everything you wrote, almost none of it in fact, but I can see you put a lot of time, energy and maybe some thought into it. I won't deny any of it. Weather you get kicked off or not, it doesn't matter as you rarely, never in fact have something to contribute and share with anyone. You never post any rare or interesting finds. You don't post histories on anything. You don't post how-to's on doing repairs. You don't offer advice and you do not compliment anyone on their interesting and/or cool posts and or acquisitions. I do think, if your sole purpose is to come here and attack frequent contributes, you will find yourself removed. That's a shame, because I have seen some of your own private past custom work and it is quite nice.

I do however contribute quite regularly. No I am not perfect, but what you see is what you get and I always tell it like I see it. One thing I have never done.. initiate an attack on anyone in any way on any forum.

Yes, I was not completely honest about the origin of the items I sold on my wife's account. I did it as a three part experiment. No one was cheated or ripped off by any of it. My wife has really been on me to clear out the masses of trains and parts I have accumulated and I really need to do it. I also needed a way to fund my daughters' ice hockey, so one is paying for the other. Problem is I do not have much time.

Reason One... Because I am at the ice rink literally every day, with my two daughters who are on 4 ice hockey teams between the two of them and also each take private ice hockey lessons twice a week. Don't believe me, call Pittsburgh Ice Arena and ask about me... or even for me if you call after 5 for that matter. Usually I am there 20-24 hours or more a week. Tonight we were at the rink almost five hours in a row. That's our every Friday routine and has been for almost a year now. Saturdays and Sundays are almost entirely spent running to anywhere from 3-5 games in one weekend. I no longer have time to clean, strip the paint / repaint and get running everything I list.

It is time that I would rather spend with my kids rather than tinkering with some trains. But.. if you were to contact ALL the buyers of every engine you will see everyone received an oiled and running engine.

Two... It was an experiment. So often you see novice sellers who incorrectly describe an item only to find the price sky rockets. I didn't notice much difference with mine, so the next set of listings I posted the following month, you will see I oiled and tested every one. I went a month between listings because I was at the rink the entire time and never had time to list on either account. By stating I didn't know about trains and coupling that with explaining how busy I am I had hoped that would squelch the many requests I would have to test an item or if it ran. Although I welcome questions in my listing, I do not always have access to internet or time to answer them promptly. Well... in this regard.. it worked and everyone was happy in the end. Check the feedback. Not a single complaint on anything I sold. She did receive one negative from someone who purchased set of Scooby Do DVD's she sold before I started selling. It was a shame because he never contacted her about the issue.

Three... My wife has complete access to every dime of every train I am selling on her account. All the money, every dime is going to her and my kids. So no... I won't deny selling on my wife's account as a novice.

Please... any future replies on this matter either create a new "Sean Bashing" topic or send to me as a private PM.

Sean
