Who in their right mind would pay that much for that? For the same price, you can get a brand new DCC fitted, high detailed H0 scale train from Bachmann. Some people.

"A lot of modellers out there who go to these train shows see broken HO stuff and go, 'This is useless' when, in reality, they can still be used for modeling whether it's as a prop on your layout or a cool project to make something old new again."

Like everything else, certain stuff gets hot and people fight over it. Case in point, I watched a Tyco bobber just like that ACL one go for over $200 last year. It was the US Army one. Even mine didn't sell for that, it was a one-off bidding war.
I'm fairly certain I've seen that Branchline car before and never thought twice about what it was.

And oftentimes, because consequences to bad buyers on Ebay are practically nil, the people who win these unusually heated auctions simply don't pay, and the item goes to one of the lower bidders, if the seller can manage to contact them.
Nonpaying buyers are one of my biggest problems as an Ebay seller.

| Knock on wood, but non-paying buyers are very few and far between in the train business.

I should try selling more trains then. I had a lot of inventory tied up by tire-kickers when I was selling general collectible stuff...
