Mike,

Here's a recent Bachmann Spectrum SD45 drive...

This is not the DCC equipped SD45, but I'm assuming the drive didn't change with that addition.

Now here's the recent Bachmann EZ-DCC SD40-2 drive...

Tony,

Thanks for the comparision. Any chance you can tell me about how much that SD40-2 weighs? Looks like it should be well over 16 oz. That is what I usually like to ballast my locos to.

I have an older Spectrum series SD45. It looks nothing like either of the chassies you show. So obviously, Bachmann designed a new chassie/mechanism for the SD40-2. Odd that they didn't add more exterior detailing. More details would have increased the price too much. But why does the SD40-2 with the "all new" mechanism cost the same as the GP38-2 which recycles the older GP40 mechanism. The GP's extra details aren't that impressive! I always thought that the mechanism was the most expensive assembly.

Does the SD40-2 have flywheels by chance? I realize the newer Bachmann mechanisms really do not need the flys, but I still like them.
