Not so much a set as they are indentical rollling stock, I offer up these Lima flats , which are getting converted with Bachmann Jeepster/Trackster bodies instead of the original Mercedes sedans. I think the Kasier Jeeps look better than those German cars myself. I have about 5 converted so far, with 3 more to go. Will join my AMC train eventually, as Kasier sold out to AMC in 1970, so they're cousins at least.

For this week, my SOTW is an LGB garden train set from 1981 that my family got at a train show earlier this month for $120. I've seen the same set I'm about to show you even without the box for over $600 on EBay and this set is mint due to it never being taken out of the box before we got it. Runs great too.

You inspired me to dig out some of my crazy PC flats. Note the paint over on the Pennsylvania flat. As the Penn Central crumbled into insolvency, it had a nasty habit of splattering on the worst sort of paint overs, or sometimes, just obliterating the Fallen Flag's logo and not even putting on a worms in love stenciling. As to the gondola loaded with oranges, I defy anyone to show me a prototype gondola hauling fruit. But in Tycoland, many things are possible.

John, you need to get with The Tramp who has a hard to fit SD 90. Hey, I once saw a UP business train of stream liners with a DD 40X on the head end.

My set of the week is a hobo freight headed up by a Mantua 8 Ball Mogul 2-6-0 with a consist of Mantua Metal Products freight cars using the original hook and loop couplers (except for the tender and the "front" coupler on the B&O box car). I've been and am going to be slowly going through the Mantua Metal cars I have, but I think I'm going to keep some just as I received them . . . as they were modeled . . . and have "worn" over the ensuing 50 to almost 70 years. The only thing done to the cars in this consist is pretty much just oiling the axles and getting the couplers aligned. The hopper car has enough dust in the bottom to resemble the remnants of a load and the caboose looks like it's been sitting under trees for a spell with a roof that's caked with crud. The locomotive had rare earth magnets done a while back, but it did just have a tune up. The pilot wheels kept jumping the track and that was fixed by removing a conical spring I had placed (thinking it would "hold the pilot truck down", when in fact it was acting to prevent it from staying down) and certainly a lot of black crud was removed from the tender wheels. Anyway . . . just for the grins of having pictures to look at.

That was like watching koy in a Japanese fish pond: beautiful and serene. Love the history on those Mantua pieces. Great that you opted to retain the old style loop and hook couplers.

Barry, I liked the video. That's a pretty nice train from the front of the engine to the back of the caboose!
To all who watch it, if you click the YouTube logo and watch it from YouTube and click the full-screen icon, it'll show the video full-screen, eliminating the letterbox effect that shows it so small on the embedded video. The movie deserves to be seen big and clear.

Thanks Jeff, Don, I spend a good amount of time ("planning", hey?) just watching those old trains lumber around my pretty minimalist layout. I got lucky with the lighting on this video; the camera I take video with seems to require a tremendous amount of light.

My SOTW contribution this week is one I have been watching on e*ay all week and just as of a few minutes ago purchased. It was poorly listed, so by my standards, I picked it up pretty cheap.
It is a Penn Line New Haven GG1 and passenger car set. The cars in this set ate pretty rare as I have all of the old time heavyweight cars, but the streamlined cars I have until now did not have any in my collection.

Yes it is a beautiful set.
And those weird ebay listings can be a lifesaver. I just picked up a 4-car set of Mantua aluminum Santa Fe cars in excellent shape, listed as "Rivarossi" cars (someone had packed them in Rivarossi boxes) that I'm sure would have been bid out the roof otherwise.

No kidding. A lot of the Mantua stuff I see on Ebay go for way more than $100 just for a Mantua steam locomotive from the 1950's while I've seen them at train shows for so much cheaper. For example, that 1950's Mantua Pacific I got at a train show a couple of weeks ago. I got that for $30 with a nice freight car in great cosmetic condition. Aka it runs great, looks great, etc. Meanwhile on Ebay, pretty much the same loco goes for much more than I got mine for.

I loves the set too <3 Funny thing is that I don't think NH had a GG1 or a dome car then cause of low tunnel clearances

Correct, the NH did not have a GG1. I remember someone telling me a while ago that the PRR borrowed one of the NH electrics to test run it before they developed their GG1. The NH ran a lot of electrics. I don;t think they had any problems with tunnel clearances, but maybe there were on the NYC shared lines?
Don't know about the dome ar, but you may be right about that too!

Thanks Jeff! I have been wanting one for some time. I have another NH GG1 and the factory paint on that one is perfect, so I may swap them for the benefit of the set.
If it came with a motor from the factory, I can get it running again! I don't foresee any issues with this set!

This is the second weekend for the New River Train. I watched it go through town twice last weekend. Several domed streamliners - including some of the full dome cars. Runs on the CSX between Huntington and Hinton WV I think this is the longest excursion train operating in the US at 29 cars.

For my very late SOTW, I present two Ebay finds bought together for $18. The locomotive is has a little paint scratching but no damage, and the boxcar is in perfect condition. The engine needs some maintenance.

Jerry - I saw that train stopped in Huntington - the colors and the multiple railroads - OOOH! It's just a gorgeous train.
I have to agree on some of the major steals - the garden set is FANTASTIC - the Penn Line New Haven set is just extra special as well. The Mantua Metal with video is great. The Bachmann UP set also a winner. The woody Jeeps shine. I really have to compliment everyone this week - it just seems like some great finds and treasures.
Here's my contribution this week - a Varney Aerotrain that needs a complete engine rework. The shell just picks up off the motor & truck assembly.

I thought you might be in the area from your avatar
I love watching it speed through Charleston in the mornings. Gives me chills
I shot some video that I will try tp ost when I get back home next week. I saw a new addition to the train this year, one of the Katy Texas Special cars. Absolutely beautiful. Also saw the Iowa Pacific full dome car again that I posted on the COTW a few months ago.
