I"ve been working on a project for one of the forum members. It's a custom made boiler for 0-4-0 tank engine. I decided to use aluminum because it's cheaper than brass and easy to machine. Here's the blank after basic machining.
Then the boiler needed to be hollowed out for the motor. I intended to do this much neater on a large milling machine. But, I ended up using a big drill and a large file.

The smokebox front was then drilled for the tiny nuts and washers and the numberboard location.

detail nuts and bolts added:

Numberboard machined

Another picture before painting

Painted: (it looks lumpy but it's mostly lighting and camera flash. It turned out o.k., I think).

Awesome boiler, NC. It looks just like the one on the actual thing. And what railroad owned this specific locomotive you're trying to model?

Beautiful work, NC. You got those bolt holes perfectly spaced.
Btw, we all know who it's for.

Thanks. That paint was a little too lumpy. I"ve since stripped and repainted it. No pics, though. It's already in the hands of it's new owner.

Redo on the smokebox. After some discussion with the locomotive builder, I decided to make another smokebox for the 0-4-0T project. This time I made a removable smoke box cover, just like TYCO steam locomotives. And the numberboard is removable. The cover or door is held on by a screw which can also be used to bolt this to the boiler, if need be. Just needs paint.
