Here's a bit of a curious item I saw today that I didn't know existed...

It has filled-in front and rear pilots, so it appears to resemble the original late '70s AHM SD-40 model made in Yugoslovia.

Knew IHC and Mehano had sold it or close relatives, but the Model Power example is a new one to me.

I did not know that Model Power ever carried the SD40. I don't remember seeing any adds for it in the old issues of MR. I don't think I've ever seen it listed by the mail order companies either. Is it possible that it is an AHM/IHC unit that got put into a MP box? Does the box say "SD40" on it?
Model Power did/does carry diesels made by Mehano, so it would make sense they might carry the SD40.

Yeah, I can't find any reference to a Model Power run of this SD-40 either. It's on eBay right now. Also can't confirm the box flap info, I need to e-mail the seller.

Wonder if it might have been a Canadian-only issue by Model Power?

"Canadian only issue"
Did Model Power do any Canada only issues? Do you know what time periods CP Rail used the markings/paint scheme shown on the model? Maybe the seller would be nice enough to send you a photo or two of the loco out of the box. Maybe even a shot without the shell.

Mike,

Here's the link to the eBay auction...

http://cgi.ebay.com/Model-Power-6801-CP-Rail-Loco-4242-SD-40-2-W-Fly-Wheel_W0QQitemZ180101832085QQcategoryZ19133QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

It has shots of the model top, and both ends out of the box. It's got the full pilots, so I'm saying it's of the earlier Mehano design...similar to what AHM first brought to market in 1979-80.

The "Canada-Only" is just a guess, based on the CP Rail roadname. The Model Power box is typical of '70s-later packaging. The SD-40 again doesn't exist until AHM brings it out around 1980 and they are out of business by the mid 1980s.

I'd say it was 1985-1995 issue, but that's just a guess. I've never seen it in Model Power catalogs and don't think it made any Walthers catalogs.

Tony,

I looked at the old RMC review of the AHM SD40, Feb 1980. The pilots look identical. So my guess is that the seller is misidentifing his loco. It probably got stuffed into a MP C628 box. But would need the info on box flap to know for sure.

Hi,
I'm not speaking from any profession of CP locomotives, but the nose looks a bit too stubby-like, and the tail hood looks like it has the room of an SD40-2.
The numbering system is also very odd.

Ask the seller what it says on the fuel tank bottom.
Maybe this site might help?

Well...
G'day!

I don't have a one track mind. It depends on the turn-out.

Is that a power-trip or just another pick-up line?

Yes, Model Power did apparently import a run of SD-40 models similar to AHM examples. Found in the 1986 Walthers Catalog the SD-40 is among Model Power locomotives.

Model Power stock number 6801 was Canadian Pacific and 6802 was Canadian National. The models are listed as flywheel equipped and sold in powered examples only for $29.98.

Tony,

Going from the photos, I'd say the Model Power SD40 was more than similiar. Same manufacturer but different importer. Later, IHC imported the same model with no flywheels but the same motor. I have not seen an IHC SD40 with the Mabuchi can motor that has become standard for Mehano made diesels.

How do the modern Mabuchi motors perform?

The Mabuchi motors are quite good actually. Very low current draw and equally low starting voltage. All the ones I have played with are smooth running and quiet. They produce just a whisper of a hum. I like them enough that I use them in my repowered locos when I can. I have not seen the twin shaft motor for sale. But you can get the single shaft motor from All Electronics for $2.00 each!
