I like a challenge.
A friend gave me a box labeled "Heartbreak Project".
I soon found out what that meant.
Picture a cab forward after a double end-o off a layout.Ouch.
Cab mostly gone, rear pilot attached mostly by gravity.
The worst was,a dead short when power applied. Why the previous owner didn't see the rear drivers were on the wrong side I don't know. This can't happen by accident.
With parts from old brass clocks and a donor Big Boy pilot, a scratch built cab(not by me) off I went.

Not very happy with the cab.
I really want it to be a B&O, so I'll have to find another I guess.
But, from a boxful of sadness, Victory.

Sorry to hear about what happened to that loco. It's definitely showing some progress though.

Hey Evan, Is the cab in that second photo one that you built from scratch or the original with a bunch of putty on it yet or what? I kind of like these type of projects as well, but I'm curious about the story about the cab. I can see where maybe you had to replace part of the roof, but I can't see why the sides seem so crude? Maybe the photo is just suppose to show a certain stage of your repair? Tell us more. Thanks. Barry

The cab was in a batch of scratch stuff I got some time ago.All made out of styrene.
I think the cab was painted without barrier on it, and the paint kind of distorted it.
I added a piece of wood and sanded to shape, with a little Squadron putty as well.
That's one reason I'm not happy with it .Does look like crap, doesn't it?
Maybe a Mantua cab would look better.
As always, any tips or opinions are welcome.

Again, I learned the hard way 40 years ago, not to have unprotected rails close to the edge of a layout...

Looks like that cab does need a fair amount of work, but if you got time and you want to be a sculptor, you could try some JB Weld here and there with a toothpick and then have some fun carving with a knife and file. Then, that magic black paint to cover . . . I think you could make it look at least 75% better. And then it would be like me going fishing; buying a license and getting all geared up for a single trip out during the season to catch one of those $40 trout. Just depends on what you wanna do. I wasn't trying to rag on you by any means. Just discussing model building you know. It would be cool to see what you could do with that mess.

Don't sweat it, Barry. I didn't pick up any"ragging"vibes from your comment.
I agree it looks worse in the pic.Like I said ' I think it was painted without barrier on it, which softens the styrene.
The previous owners other work looks pretty good.
I would have liked to see his finished models.
Here is some of his stuff in varied stages of completion.
I harvested a few bits for other locos.
