Is there a way to achieve an better Krauss Maffei? I was thinking of getting a clunker and using the shell and side frames on a different all-wheel drive chassis like an SD45. I found one in N scale on Shape Ways and mates up to an SD45. I imagine the side frames will need major work to work to an different truck.

There's not exactly any good way to turn the single-piece trucks into sideframes. A better plan would be to see if you can figure out how to mount the trucks into a different frame. I've got a Krauss Maffei and an SD45 disassembled in adjacent boxes, I'll go take a look and see what suggestions I can make.

May not be any good way to match up the KM sideframes to an Athearn SD45 truck, but it is doable. I wonder....I have an undec Bachmann Spectrum/Plus SD45 that needs something to do. Could the Bachmann drivetrain be shoehorned into a KM shell?

A single power truck like some RS11's and C Liners. Yucky! I know the side frames would need serious altercations.

So, what's wrong with the KM as is? I've run mine a few times, seems to have adequate power. Mind you , I haven't pulled a 70 car unit train behind one, either. But the two I've treid seemed to run around in a circle OK. A weird design of this Rivarossi motor is that it's not a 3 pole or 5 pole...its a 4-pole motor. Usually they keep them uneven armature arms, so that it won't get stuck in a position, I guess. I thought it had the AHM / Tempo encased motor, well it IS encased, but not the same design. What's your beef with it, Justin ? Here's a few picture of one of mine, a converted SP unit to almost RG, it has a constant-light circuit installed up front, with two caps and a transistor, so it won't blink on and off I imagine. I will have to try this engine out, because I don't believe I have had the shell off before. Interesting surprise inside. I may copy this light circuit for future use. I believe the collectors have driven the prices up, I rarely see them sell for under 50-60 at my local Virginia / Maryland trian shows, or see any prices lower. Even when I ask if they will sell for less, they always seem to come back with the "they're collectible " mantra Whatever. I've gotten several of mine for 40 or less, due to less than perfect Ebay advertising. Or a vendor at a show that wanted to move them. But they do seem to bring a premium these days.

No beef Jerry! I like to make a better engine out off it. And see what could be done to do so.

It can be done. Here is a video of a modified pair of KM's at the South Bay Historical Railroad Society's model railroad layout:

Hope it provides some inspiration.
EDIT: Here is a video of one using an Athearn U33C:

Interesting kitbash. I need some dramamine to watch that video. I think it would have been better to put the camera on a tripod and move the locomotive.

My brother says, to leave the original Riva. motor. It's more prototypical to the KM, poor running, faltering, rattling, and breaking down. Looks like a candidate for a dual Rivarossi power truck if you don't go the Athearn route. http://www.tycoforums.com/tyco/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=11338&SearchTerms=c,liner

Those ball bearing motors do run quite well if they are in good shape and haven't had dirt in the bearings, but they are 3 pole. All of Rivarossi's armatures were 3 pole, excluding much later versions with Igarashi 5 pole motors, which the KM's never saw.
Those are some old paper caps in that unit.

Oops, you're right, I can't count. Sure looked like 4, I had to mark'em as I spun the motor, but there are only 3. My bad.

I've done that too, peering into can motors through their small holes, first thinking I've got a 5 pole when it's a 3. At any rate, if you ever find a 4 pole RR motor I'll pay serious cash for it.
