Picked this up at Value Village a few years ago for the vast sum of $7.99 I saw it on a shelf with other lamps and thought "That doesn't belong there!" Yoink!!

That's a pretty cool find, PGE. Does it still work?

I would think if I added kerosene it would work. As you can see, though, it's pristine. I'd hate to stink it up with fuel.

I got an idea!
Rig up a battery operated LED & use it in lantern OR wait till Halloween & get one of them bulb inserts that go into a pumpkin

That actually sounds pretty neat in my opinion. It would definitely fit if you tried a Halloween train theme at your house on Halloween.

| Looks repainted. It should have been "tinned" meaning dipped in molten solder. There should be a date stamped on bottom of lantern. My NYCS has 4-57 on it. Nice find though.

Doesn't have any evidence of paint on it. Or that it was ever dipped in anything. Note the inside of the top.

| Might just be the lighting then. I looked at the photos I took of mine and I see how lighting affects finish. Jim

Odd, I recall posting a further response to this, but it seems to have vanished. Or...? Anyway, I looked at my lamp again in natural light. It does appear to have a thin layer of solder in some places. But, not on the inside area. So, if not dipped, how would this have got on it? Anyone? Evan

The globe clamp is installed after the coating is put on. The heat needed would weaken the clamp spring. On the Adlake Keros I have, most of the globe clamps are either natural metal or spray painted (outside only). I have posted a photo of my unused C&O to help show this. My new (from Adlake in 2000) one is similar.
Here is an old Coleman lantern to show how it was done on the old brass founts. After coating they were polished. And yes, this lantern still works.
BTW, none of mine came with the instructions. Good find.
