That muffler sticking up out of the exhaust stack gives it a sense of history. you can see the age and change in it.

I'm guessing that if it were not used, it would be shoved down to the end of the spur and not right in front of the elevator where it'd be in the way. Also, the muffler looks pretty new, as if it's still being maintained.
