The CP Rail apparently was only sold in Canada. I got mine on Ebay from a seller in Ontario Canada.
Here are some pics that show the difference between the American and Canadian boxes

This was my 1st Penn Central,,long story made short,,one day while it was riding merrily along on the outside rails it decided to derail for no apparent reason. Did fall to the inside ? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. It took a CANYON DIVE to the outside instead and was,,well,,,,Beyond Repairs. The Pen Central WAY above in the first photo with the two others is the replacement and an earlier run. You can tell this by A - the autos are painted differently B - The paint on the early runs are more of a flat paint, the later runs are more glossy paint.

Yes, this one CAME with the two pick up trucks. The box it came in got thrown away in a cleaning craze which is why I have no photos of its box.

I swear I've seen those at train shows a couple of times. They're pretty cool I must say.

Has anyone done modifications to these? I have 3 which I very much want to run but they can't seem to stay on track. Was thinking if adding 33' metal wheels and some weight somewhere. Any thoughts? How about couplers? Has anyone body mounted any on these ?

Ray I did some pretty radical modifications, slicing one into two autoracks. I liked it as it was, but because of the reasons you mentioned - plus I just had the one and it didn't look good with my other autoracks - I decided to 'work' on it. But even chopped into two separate cars, they still lack weight. I partially solved the problem by using solid rubber molded cars - they are fairly heavy in groups. Metal wheels help a lot too. I did body mount the couplers, using short screws that aren't long enough to interfere with the weight. You could also use the nylon screws and cut them to fit. Back to the weight again - I think that is the major problem. Not many places to hide extra weight except with the vehicles. Use enough heavy vehicles and soon your problem will be too much weight.

If I had a big layout with 24"R + curves I'd love to have a train of those tri-level auto racks (someday)

The Canadian box is bizarrely enough more detailed about the set than the American box. I'm not sure why Bachmann chose to do that.

Yes, yes, and yes. I did these mods many years ago ( 7, 8? I forget ), and ran them a few times at shows. Wow, didn't know about the CP version, I don't have that one, eh . I modified the body to accept Athearn-style trucks, I tried several methods, from tapping the hole for 6.32 hardware, to filling the hole in some then re-drilling for the smaller 2-56 I think. It's been awhile. Couplers were also changed, I mounted two different styles of Kadee pockets, so I have two different types on these two cars. I also loaded mine up with the Fresh Cherries Gremlins and Pacers, 1/87 scale and mostly metal. The Tri-levels now weigh quite a bit, and on flat track, they ran fine. Several times I ran them without the bottom level of cars, and they were a bit top-heavy, and fell over on some uneven trackwork. I secured the autos with a play-doh like sticky ball under each car, and that worked OK, but some fell out during transport. I think I used double-sided sticky tape after that. Anyway, here's a few pics of mine , of the upgrade work, and running at a Library show. I haven't run them in awhile, as I need to find a way to better secure the autos on the racks. I also have more car colors now than I did then, there are 4 colors, so I need to find the other colors and put them on the Tri's, too.

I learned in the 1970s that a rail along the edge of the board was a disaster. Lost many Tyco pieces that way... My new layout will have one long side track at the edge of the board, but a am going to add something along that area where NOTHING will hit the floor...

Those car loaders look fabulous, Smith. I love those diets Pacers on there. They look so well detailed.

Just a side comment here. If you run the tri levels on your layout, make sure of your clearances. particularly overpasses and tunnels. Like the real railroads I had to raise them and move some buildings to clear them, all because I used the standard NMRA guage. Had to get the plastic adapter to place the gauge in, then use it.

Thanks! More of a 'what if' experiment than anything else. I think they come out to a scale 44' long. Definitely got rid of the overhang on curves!

Very interesting; I was considering getting one of those tri-level auto carriers (obviously the Santa Fe version), but now that I can see how tall and long they are, I might not bother. They might derail easily on the 18" radius curves and turnouts, and may not clear my tunnel and signal bridge very well. I planned to get one for doing a train of nothing but auto-carriers... at least I got this so far!
(Coincidentally, the locomotive here is Bachmann!)
