My BOTW is something I just dug this out of a ton of model railroading stuff I have in the garage. Here it is. It's a building I painted many, many years ago while learning how to paint a model railroad structure so that's why it looks so odd.
Anyway, my parents were thinking of throwing this thing away when they found it hidden in my closet and I decided I would keep it because all it really needs is to be repainted and then it would work good on my layout.

I was actually going to make it an abandoned building to put right next to another abandoned building that looks just like it to make it kind of a 2 shop thingy like in a lot of different towns in my area but thanks for the suggestions.

Stephen I think turning your building into a hobby shop is a great idea
I did this building into my own hobby shop.

| Jerry, that hobby shop is fine. Super paint work. Several things I like about that; the brick work, the color you chose for the windows, the look of the iron fire escape. Crazy great. And kovoacste000, you know, we've got some old buildings in our town, that are painted just about that shoddy way. Seems like many times when some one takes over a building, the first thing they do is throw up a coat of paint and many times it's a slap-dash job. So even though it might look funky, I believe there's a place for it on a layout.

Maybe but still, the paint needs some touching up anyway.

Stephen - I agree, I would touch it up too. But the point is but as funny as it seems there IS always a prototype of that thing you have - be it building, locomotive or rolling stock - somewhere. Heck just looking at your building, I have seen ones just like it on the back streets of old towns or in the funky parts of cities. Bunch of 60s 'hippies' take it over, paint up.....

Me too, actually. I've been to Seattle a couple of times (The closest city to my hometown.) and I see buildings that had paint jobs as crazy as that H0 scale building I have here. Possibly even crazier.

Just the Ticket.
A modern layout would need the remnants of a run down restaurant building, next to an old church with a bell tower. You will need a pile of trash near the front door of the church. Outside the church you will need to add an old rusty VW-Mico Bus.

You can get anything you want at Alice's Restaurant. You know, that story involved a conscripted army, so that "modern" scene would be at least 40 years ago. http://youtu.be/-yLg_bzwvxg It's a movement!

John, If you build that church with the trash, make sure Obie takes some good 8x10 glossy photos of it . I was only 7 in '72, and the service was all-volunteer when I enlisted, but I always liked the movie--and more importantly, A.G. Jr's version of the City of New Orleans. Chris

Truth be told, I was too young to be a hippie and didn't much admire them at the time, anyhow. I hadn't heard of Arlo Guthrie until about 1993 or '94.
In 1992 (on leap year day ) I climbed up on a bridge superstructure to take some pictures and someone mistakenly thought I was going to commit suicide. This caused a stir and I was arrested for trespassing. A year or two later, I applied for some life insurance and they asked if I was ever arrested. Needless to say I was worried about what they'd make of a situation where someone thought I was attempting suicide.
I mentioned this to a couple of coworkers and they both blurted out, "Alice's Restaurant." One of them loaned me a tape of it. When he got to the part about being grouped in with the criminals because he was arrested for littering and then the part about if you or someone you know is in a similar situation, I saw what they meant.
Hence my knowledge of what John was talking about.
