Browsing ebay, noticed how high Atlas/Con-Cor/Roco locos are running. I know they are decent mechanisms but still they are dated and seem a little much for me. High $20s - $30s and higher? Or am I just out of date myself?

Jerry, with the prices of a new Athearn or Proto diesel running $300; I think it puts a greater price on the older, decent running units. I started noticing that with the older Athearn, Blue-Box, truck trailers. When the newest trailers started coming out with $29 price tags; the old Athearn stuff that had been $5 soon was $10-15.

A few years ago Model Power was selling off there shark noses and FA1 for $69. each and sold out quickly. So by now little used, boxed, old ones should have a higher price than $20. More like $50. A E7 should be higher still. Roco collectors from Europe maybe buying them up. Even at that any good new engine without DCC or sound seams to be close to $100. frank

While I might agree that Con-cor, Roco and Model Power locos are too high-priced, I do believe used Atlas locos are usually worth what I pay for them. $35 for a C30-7, for example - it didn't have handrails, but it is hands-down the best runner out of anything I've ever seen (except possibly for my new C420, but anyways), and it's DCC-ready. I got an older Atlas GP40-2 for $10 because it had a smashed-up pilot - the mechanism's fine, I can fix the rest. It might just be me being accustomed to today's prices because I'm young, but I'm not one to complain about them.

I think you're right. It a little hard to find a model train selling for $10 at a train show and even if you do, it has some sort of fundamental flaw whether it's the motor, the chassis, etc. 10 years ago that wasn't really the case. In general, I don't really see many Con-Cor/Roco stuff at train shows. Sure, there's a couple of them but I don't see a ton.

Frank, do you watch prices on Roco very much? I have a bunch of the Roco Sharks with various drive systems and I have wondered what they may be worth. Some of them are in Model Power boxes.

Atlas builds very good quality, no doubt worth it. But I'm specifically referring to the older locos I call "Atlas Austria" and the identical (as far as I can tell) Con-Cor locos also built by Roco. Probably considered state-of-the-art when they were offered over 30 years ago And..probably worth the prices as Frank described, especially if in new condition, but when I can still find decent BB locos at train shows in the $25-$30 range.....I find it hard to plunk down $50 on a Roco.
