Here's my AOTW. It's a little project I'm working on which should be done by the end of the year. It's basically an old Arnold Rapido n-scale caboose I got in a lot of old Arnold Rapido trains for $15. The axle was broken and I knew it would be a pain to find a worthy replacement so I'm going to make it into a drive-in.

"A lot of modellers out there who go to these train shows see broken HO stuff and go, 'This is useless' when, in reality, they can still be used for modeling whether it's as a prop on your layout or a cool project to make something old new again."

How reliable are the slot car mechanisms? I tried to do something with it, but the manufacturer was AMC or something, made in China, and while esthetically cute, of very poor quality. The biggest problem were the contacts which lost conductivity quickly, the gears loosening up was a problem next, and then finally the little cars traveled so fast as to be almost invisible. Tried slowing them down, and they would stall frequently. How well does your layout work? What vintage slots do you use?

Hi Jeff... Not sure how this works yet as it is being cleaned and finally snapping it together. I used this same old style Tyco track, and mostly AFX slot cars in the 70s with good results. THIS time around, in a nice dry basement opposed to damp garage... Plus Blaneo told me about NoOxId, an electrical grease to protect all of the electrical contact areas. IF this only works as good now as it did then, I'll be happy. Should be much better now!

Most intriguing. Hope we can see the results of your work, even if not fully complete.

...and the harbor module made it to the modular train show in El Paso. We were working on it up to the last minute getting the tracks to align properly and electrical to function correctly. It, too, is not complete yet.

I'm working on a slot/train layout using Tyco slotcars from the early 70's. My layout is not nearly as large as Walt's, but the basic concept is similar. The old brass-pan cars I have are non-magnetic and much slower than newer cars. As long as the rails are cleaned every so often the cars run smoothly without stalling.

I know Marx offered the gate as a separate HO item, but I'm surprised they actually went that far! (And microbusss, I believe it just has the gates.)
But here's something else neat I got today from Walthers: Life-Like's new nickel-silver HO-scale track bumpers!

I'm putting one on my new electrically-isolated siding, so I can easily tell when the siding is activated or not!

Pretty neat idea if you ask me. it reminds me of those old Lionel layouts where they used those bumpers for the trolley that they run.

Oh-oh, I hope that your bumpers have LEDs instead of conventional light bulbs! If they are conventional light bulbs, be careful about sending to much current through them, the bulbs will get hot enough to melt the plastic housing!
