In my ongoing search to duplicate the great chrome finishes on Tyco trains I did this experiment with this old undecorated Athearn shell I had and some new rust-o-leum paint I found at a home center. I would like some feedback on what you all think of the finish.

Going by the photo, it looks like it's very close to the Testor's "Chrome" silver color - which I like, but it's not quite the finish of the original Tyco chrome. Looks like it would be great for a passenger car polished stainless steel finish. Again though, very hard to accurately judge the finish from a photo.

I agree, that it looks more like a stainless steel finish. Nice match for Santa Fe's F units. I found this on the internet: http://www.7litre.org/plasticchrome.html
I didn't read the article but, the finished product looks pretty decent for chrome finish.
Unspoken expectations are premeditated failures.

I actually found one today. Not the factory fresh one I was looking for but the price was right. Runs good, shows some use, I like it.

I remember many years ago reading a review in Model Railroader of an adhesive backed foil for simulating stainless steel. I don't know if it was as shiny as the Silver Streak though, and I have no idea if it's still available.

I honestly think that the chrome finish used by Tyco in the past was superior to any of the finishes offered by the other low priced train manufacturers, they really seemed to get it right. Some of the ones done by Bachman are globby and thick compared to the Tyco models. There are some new spray on chrome finishes out there now being marketed by airbrush and automotive paint suppliers that I think could rival the old Tyco finish. It works well on plastics and when it becomes a bit more affordable I would like to invest in one of their application packages. I have seen demonstrations of these products on YouTube and it is amazing to watch as it is almost like magic as they spray an entire car and the chrome finish just seems to appear!

That could be it, Jerry. It's certainly the same type of product, if not the same manufacturer.

I think that Rustoleum looks far better than that chrome finish. Judging by your photos, it would be good for stainless passenger cars. The finish looks amazing for a rattle can, especially compared to Tyco's 1/4" of paint.

I'm glad you like that engine. I like it too actually. I don't know, something about the look of it.

Ever tried Testor's "Chrome Silver" rattle can paint? If applied with care, it produces an acceptable finish, somewhat imperfect compared to a true chrome look but can be very reflective - and the imperfection seems to give a weathered look. Overcoating it with gloss clear, dullcote or clear acrylic gloss varies the effect - usually tones down the brightness to a more stainless look.
