John "Video Ghostbuster" at the El Paso Model Train Club tinkered with her, and found that the speaker was bad, and installed a new one.
She works perfectly, making a sweet, if harsh, "hack-chuff: sound synchronized to speed by use of a mechanical cam driven by a series of gears. There is no stationary "hiss," however.
She is off the market. Either she becomes the club pet, or I will buy her up. But, she lives again!

Glad you finally got that thing fixed.

"A lot of modellers out there who go to these train shows see broken HO stuff and go, 'This is useless' when, in reality, they can still be used for modeling whether it's as a prop on your layout or a cool project to make something old new again."

Wellllll, I assumed it worked when I first saw it. I really try to limit my collecting because in this model railroad version of Penny Poker it is way to easy to end up too much of everything (see attached photo). Therefore, I figured no one else in the Club wanted it, so why not convert it to cash for the roof fund.
After being challenged to get it to work, I got our Master Mechanic to fix it, and having heard it, fell in love with it. So, I am presently debating just letting it stay with the Club, or having a vote about selling it to me.
Frankly, like half the nation, I am pretty tapped out right about now, and out of immediate pennies, so it will probably stay with the Club for a while.
