I have just found out that the Atlas forum will be shutting down as of May 1st. While it was not as good as this one regarding "how to's" they had great prototype photos posted by their members. According to the Atlas corporation the cost of the site ($80,000) would better be served elsewhere ( maybe better product R&D or parts service???) They are going to leave the archives up, but as far as getting help repairing Atlas products, you are on your own. With Athern/Horizon Leaving tinkerers like us by the side of the road, it's clear the big boys of the hobby are focused on profits and are forgetting the needs (as well as the pocketbooks) of their customers. Acurail still makes reasonably good kit at a fair price. How long before the go the way of the do-do bird? or are we the dinosaurs?

I didn't even know there was an Atlas forum until now. That's probably why it's shutting down. Cause nobody knows about it.

maybe we can set up a new category for thier members, sort of a refugee camp. After all we are very tolerant and inclusive here. Who knows, maybe we can enlighten them as to the error of their ways.

I'm pretty much the same way. I have accounts on a few other forums (guitars, slotcars, cars, etc.) but usually only visit them if I have a specific question.
It's always baffling how worked up people on other forums can get. I asked a question last week on a certain forum regarding the starter on my car. The first response answered my problem. I thanked the guy and went on my way. I come back a day later and the thread had developed into a two page argument...
Luckily it's not like that here.

That phenomenon is a pain for the next guy to come along. There's a web server program called Apache in a download called XAMPP. I wanted to know what folder to put programs in so Apache could find them and Google landed me on a forum where someone asked the same question. Three or four screens down there was finally a reply with an answer to the question asked. Don't you just love searching through clutter when you're looking for answers?

Was the Atlas forum that bad? We are talking about model trains, right?
There is a forum I'm on and a guy asked what color paint to use on a particular model aircraft. The argument went 5 pages. The end result was 2 or 3 people banned from the forum and the entire thread deleted by the moderators.
Or even funnier or more sad, is the threads I've seen on car forums that degrade into a political rant. Huh? How did they get from talking about carburetors to so-and-so politician is a $%@%#$? And 'you were stupid to vote for him'.
Unspoken expectations are premeditated failures.

I've seen that many times before on other forums and websites on the internet. What a strange phenomena indeed.

Very strange indeed. This is why I quit the Model Railroader forum.
It's odd... it seems like the average shmoe and shmoette take all of the anger and resentment they stuff down and bury in the regular world during the course of their day -- at bosses, colleagues, family members, etc. -- and then let it fly on the interwebs where there are few consequences. Thus, sedate discussions about scrapbooking can turn into knock-down, drag-out, chair-busting cyber brawls. The web is a sea of displaced anger.
On the other hand, this forum is comparatively drama-free. In general, I think we have a better sense of humor about ourselves because of the oddball stuff we like and understand that it's just a hobby. That's my take, anyway.
And SG continues to have the best collection of animated gifs on the web.

HE CAN'T EVEN SPELL HIS OWN LAST NAME! (Of course, neither can anyone else spell it.) And, criminetlies, are you still reading this?

Want to start a war? Go on any automotive-related discussion board and ask "What's the best brand/weight/type motor oil/ATF/differential fluid to use?"

I take it that this is in reference to the ORIGINAL Atlas Forum that stopped about 2 yrs ago, right? The Atlas Rescue Forum, started up as a follow-on to the original, is a relatively mild place, but there is an over-emphasis on what Atlas products are in the pipeline/ cargo containers or the typicial "why don't they make a left-handed widget in z scale" type whines. I joined, but don't visit it more than bi-monthly, and not much occurs between visits.
If the original had been a better modeler's information resource- how-to, what-works-with-what type of place- even if it was "Altas-centric", it might have survived. The Atlas Rescue Forum COULD be that, but- sadly, "it ain't"!

Right, and that's the point. Most forums a newer person might ask a simple question, and instead of a simple answer to get them on the right path it becomes a 20 page war about relatively meaningless personal preferences - leaving the nwwbie even more confused then he was at the start

Unfortunately, I've seen those types of forums all over the internet. Not just train forums but Youtube, Facebook, Twitter, etc. It's crazy. After looking at those forums, I'm like "How did that topic become that?" I'm glad this forum isn't one of them. Not counting this thread of course.
