This is my one and only Pemco unit. A nice running F-40PH that I repainted from its original BN scheme to Amtrak phase 2

Looks much better in Amtrak than it ever did in Burlington Northern. I wonder if BN actually had one of those units. Highly doubt it.

No, the BN scheme was strictly fantasy, they never had one at all. I bought the HO scale BN version, though, because I like BN green. :)

I was pretty sure BN never had one of those. That's why I said "I highly doubt it".

Great job on the repaint, looks good. I've never had a Pemco locomotive, is it 8-wheel drive/pick-up? Can motor?

Actually the drive is much like a Tyco P/T and a cross with a life like but it runs much, much better than either of them. It has one powered truck with traction tires and all nickel silver wheels. The motor is pretty sturdy because I ran this thing hard as kid and it still runs like new. I has a kind of flywheel like freewheel that keeps it moving on bad track. The gears are much thicker and more robust than the old P/T, honestly I really like this thing

Thanks metalsmith - I see them on ebay and train shows every once in a while that I have been tempted to go for but didn't know if it would be worth it. May give it a go next time a good one comes up at a decent price.

I've had similar experiences with the Athearn locomotives. Those Athearn mechanisms seem to last forever. For example, I have an Athearn CSX F-7 that I got around 10 years ago and it still works as good as it did then and I haven't cleaned or anything like that.

| The Blomberg trucks on the Pemco are not half bad and have good axle spacing. It might be worth the trouble to install a Pemco drive in an old Tyco Geep or F-unit if you came across one (Pemco) at a swap meet or e-bay with a damaged shell. I would really like to find on of their SD-35s and C-430s just for comparison to the Tyco units.

Here is a Pemco SD-35 in ATSF Warbonnet colors that I found new in box recently never been run until I nabbed it. Slow speed performance is great and it has a realistic top speed.
