I have a Varney caboose that has those type of couplings. That's all I've got to help in this case.

I have a handful of fixed couplers like that in my parts bin but not with the rectangular opening in the shaft, mine have circular holes that would fit in a conventional box with a screw. Have never seen that type before.

varney ones had a spring in the rectangular box to have a bit of give on bends,see link ken

scroll down to draft box,i think athearn/globe ones had the round hole

My Model Train shop just got some of these as vintage in the package, I believe they were either Athearn or Kadee brand ( don't remember right off-hand ). What I THINK they do is, when you're pulling, they swivel, when you are backing up, they then slide back in the coupler pocket, and won't move to the side as much, so you're not forcing it off the track...that's my guess, anyway.
