Ken find one for me too!! After all I do own and have restored a 1972 VW bug ;) as well as helped my dad restore his 65 and worked on 2 other friends ones as well. VW nut here!

I would super do this to a later model Junker VW Van but keep the steering wheel for something to hold onto

There are rail buses in Ecuador with the steering wheel used as a hand brake wheel. The motorman uses the brake to slow down into a curve, and turns the wheel the same way whether the curve is to the right or left. It's supposed to be a bit discombobulating to see him turn the wheel to the right in order to curve left.
