I have a Tyco GP 20 and a Tyco 430 I want to repower and just use the shells. Where can I find information on where to find the complete powered chassis to use, so all I have to do is put the old shells on them. Any help will be greately apprecited.

Lew - if I understand your question correctly, I would look on ebay or a local train show/swap meet/flea market/etc. for a good running used one...or maybe someone here has some they would be willing to part with. Or perhaps the ones you have just need some simple TLC? What is the problem with them, there are some great Tyco mechanics on this site!

A 430 will nicely fit Bachmann's B23/30-7 with shell mods (interior of shell). The GP20 will fit a Athearn GP7 Blue Box frame with some coupler box mods. A member named Shaygetz retro-fitted a Tyco brown box era shell on an Athearn GP35 and a member by Alco-PRR used a B23-7 by Bachmann for the 430. Power Torques can re-powered with a CDROM motor. A perk with new chassis, DCC and sound can be added, code 83 rail used and better running/pulling/quiet running and plenty chassis parts from the mfg.'s/eBay. Don't use Athearn's Genisis as the high nose split frame chassis has no easy improvision for low nosed GP20's.

Lew, the GP 20 will drop onto Model Powers GP 20, the take overs from Mantua. I have done 2 of these "conversions", a Durango and a Chattanooga. I added DCC to both. I've picked up each Model Power off of eBay for around 20 bucks each, a little patience and a low price can be found. Tom

I had no idea it'd work Eagle! What about the handrails and what shell mods did you do?

The original handrails work as is, I didnt have to modify the shell. I'll dig up a pic or find the link to the post here on the site. On a side note I believe an old Tyco / Mantua shelll with a screw in weight would need to have the screw mounts removed.

Thanks to everyone for the quick replies and information. Will keep a look out on ebay and see what I can find. The motors for these two engines are completely shot and beyond repair. I have one that I am working on installing with a cd rom motor. Will let everyone know how it turns out. Once again, thanks for the info.

I posted a forum on using an Athearn SD-40 chassis in the C-430 but it does involve some work. A Geep-38 is an easy fit. Take a look at the Walthers low nose GP-9 as an option for the Tyco GP-20.
