Nope, plastic fantastic bubble elastic. The vendor I bought this one from said that he has seen them in red, yellow and even blue. I already hit this one with some 4000grit and some buffing wheels in my dremel. You should see it shine now! I couldn't believe it when I found the Speed Racer set, I about went gonzo. Video of this set in action soon to come.

That is so cool. Speed racer was a huge part of my childhood, and being from the same era the Atlas racer looks like something that could have been in the cartoon.

It sure does, it has the right styling and it looks like a leftover prop from Ultraman or Johnny Saco and his flying robot.

I've been thinking of getting into HO racers again… Seeing the Mach 5 and the Shooting Star certainly push me closer to investing in a HO racer set.

Wow, love that Atlas Turbo Express car! I have the chassis, Athearn, but no prop or body for it. Keep hoping to run across one. I bought a Hotwheels 1940's Batmobile, and intend to mount that body on the Athearn Turbo chassis, and put a prop out the back as well. Updated racer! :)

Having the Tyco Turbo versions, and having run them, and knowing the speed of the average Athearn Hustler chassis ( although not the special Atlas Turbo version ), I'd have to say the Tyco would win wheels down. It's light-weight, it's super-fast, and would blow the prop off that Atlas racer is my bet. The Atlas is just too heavy to get the jump, and the TTT would just walk away from it I'm guessing.

I never liked the Speed racer cartoon as a kid . I always thought it was a bit too corny and I couldn't watch it. Kinda like today's movie chase scenes and wrecks that are just totally unrealistic.

I hated Dukes of Hazzard with a passion. I'm a old police car fan, as well as old Dodge Chargers. I don't know how many beautiful Dodge Monaco police interceptors were trashed to keep that ridiculous show going, but I'm sure it was well into the hundreds.

I think they had several and repaired and reused them. If you saw the General Lee's side on a shallow angle it rippled like it was mostly Bondo.

Bondo can be leveled but I guess for TV purpose they quickly repaired the cars half assed. I had read somewhere that they did have several cars and repaired them.

I actually ran in to Tom Schneider one day at a car show event here in Illinois, he was driving his personal General Lee that he brings to these events. Rest assured, the General Lee that he drives is straight as an arrow and the paint and bodywork are flawless. I will dig and see if I can find my pictures from that event.

A friend of mine has one of the new Hemi powered cars. A far cry from the old 426 hemis that were just brutal. You can't drive these older hemis without getting the "Shakey foot"... It was a good marketing choice to reproduce the hemi name for sales! I'm glad they did.

I remember the Mammoth Car episode! I also remember, with the rail connection, it even caused a huge train wreck due to it not clearing the track of a railroad crossing in time (they should have stopped for the signals!)

A recreation of that wreck, just without the Mammoth car! (I should have added a wrecked stock car with pigs streaming out of it though!)

well idk about the 1st in the end credits & the last one but all the rest are real cars

Mach GoGoGo is the original name of it
Second Wind from Hot Wheels may have been a proposed Mach 5 but it never became one
even tho the 1st models did have all the Mach 5 logos & stuff put on it

Johnny Lightning Made a whole series of cars based on the show

Also I always thought the Mach Five resembled a concept car from the early sixties The hood is the most unique thing about the Mach 5 appearance
