Hello:
Bachmann is introducing an all-new HO-Scale SD-40-2 later this year. Similar to the already talked about GP-38-2, this model represents EMD's other biggest seller of the 1970s. The pre-production images Bachmann has shown and what was recently seen at the Philadelphia NMRA Show in early July leads one to say the model is a Phase I example of the SD-40-2. Here's a look at the model as it appeared at the NMRA Show:

Roadnames for the first group of SD-40-2 models will include:
Santa Fe (Freight Warbonnet) Norfolk Southern CSX (Bright Future) Burlington Northern CP Rail Union Pacific
Like the coming HO-Scale GP-38-2, this Bachmann model will be offered with analog DC standard operation for $45 and EZ-DCC equipped for $65.
Bachmann fans will recall that in the early '80s the company once offered an HO-Scale SD-40-2...

This was billed as having "Space Age Technology" with its flashing beacon. The model was pretty crude, even by the standards of ready-to-run of that time. It came after Bachmann's F40PH and just before the high-hood GP50.
The new 2006 Bachmann SD-40-2 will certainly be a welcomed improvement over their original effort. Delivery has been stated as being Fall '06.

Hey,
My experience with the most recent Bachmann Standard line and EZ-DCC locos has been very good. I've got a few GP-40s both with and without DCC; a DCC GP-35; and DCC GP-30; and a standard B23/30-7. Also have a few of the recent FT-A and FT-B offerings and all are solid performers.

Out of that bunch I've got maybe two that sound a bit load or sorta have a "grinder" sound to them, but they run smooth regardless.
They're all-wheel drive and can pull long trains with no problems. I'd rate them in league with Athearn's Ready-To-Roll offerings in performance. The new Bachmann locos are Very Good for the price.

I am probably in the minority, but I actually like that grinder sound. It sounds sort of like a real diesel idling. None of the Bachmann locos that I have with this sound seem to incur any damage due to it and run better over time.

I could use about 10 of these! A few in Chessie System and maybe 1 or 2 in Seabord System. Is this Bachmans mold or is it from a previous manufacturer? I know GSB offered an SD-40-2 for several years then it dissapeared.

The coming Bachmann SD-40-2 model will be all-new tooling. That silver painted example was pictured at the NMRA show in July 2006 and is an example of this new mold. Bachmann is calling for delivery of this new SD-40-2 and an all-new GP-38-2 by the end of Ocotober 2006...so about now.
At the Chicago iHobby show just this last weekend, Bachmann may have had decorated examples of the shells for both the GP-38-2 and SD-40-2. On the Bachmann "Ask The Bach-Man" forum, I did read that painted GP-38-2 models arrived and that the SD-40-2s were expected by the show's end. However, Bachmann hasn't posted pics just yet...I do expect them any time. I will post links to the pics as soon as I find them.
Bachmann did have a very weak example of an SD-40-2 originally introduced in the early '80s...this new model will NOT be using that mold...it will be ALL-NEW.
I'm looking forward to both the GP-38-2 and SD-40-2, they look pretty good and will be priced very, very nicely. See my older post above for roadname; price; and DCC info.
Look for 'em soon!
