hey guys, im looking at an HO loco shell on ebay, and the shipping to me in new zealand is quoted at $38.55. the shell itself has a start price of $5. the shipping turns it into a $60 piece of plastic. lol.
can anyone please confirm if thats actually correct? ive emailed the seller to double check. i know shippings expensive, but didnt thing it was that bad!
thanks in advance!

I usually ship to international, rarely get anything that way - but I would say that they might be quoting you an Express Mail type shipping option. Here, if you go USPS Priority Mail International, the rates are sky-high. Drop it down to USPS First Class Package International and they are relatively reasonable.

According to this website:
http://ircalc.usps.com/MailServices.aspx?country=10324&m=6&p=1&o=0&MailingDate=1/15/2014&MailingTime=8:00%20AM&dv=20#
Sounds to me the price he has is for Priority shipping with a 1 pound weight quoted.
If it were me, depending on the value, I am willing to ship via First Class Mail International provided the total $ incl shipping does not exceed $30.
First class for a 1 pound items is ~$15. However if this is just a plastic shell, I would estimate the total weight with the box should be ~10 ounces. I figure then the shipping should be ~$13

Most don't ship First Class Parcel anymore because it's rarely scanned after it leaves the US, which leaves the seller open to false claim of non-reciept. Without a tracking number showing delivered, you're on the hook for it even if it gets lost by their country's postal service or customs.
I got burned on a sale of an HOn30 set to Great Britain a couple years ago - sure enough, the turkey listed it for sale about six months later, too. I won't ship anything first class anymore as a result. And I don't ship to Great Britain at all after their postal service was of zero help trying to track the package down. As in, no one would even try.

thanks, guys! the seller has come back with "Good question! The shell doesn't weigh much, likely less than the packaging. I'd need to get a heavy duty box to ship it in, so let's say $10.00 US all told." which sounds promising!
the shell itself is a custom painted one that i know a friend would absolutely love. its not at all prototypical, but thats fine.

I just shipped a model to the Netherlands via USPS First Class Package International. It came with tracking. I guess it's a gamble any way you look at it but Priority mail was prohibitive pricewise.

That's why I set the $ limit. I would say in a regular month about 5% of my # of sales are international and most of them are under the $20 mark per item. It is worth the risk to ship First Class then b/c many are repeat buyers and if I ever have a problem, I just block them. I can count on both hands the number of times I have really had a problem with customs. Almost always with Italy & Mexico. Once with Germany, Chili and UK.
I have shipped without problems to China, Ukraine, Russia, Australia, Austria, Slovenia, Belgium, Japan, Taiwan, France, Portugal, Canada, Brazil, etc... to name a few..

| i usually have them pay via paypal via separate invoice direct, that way it shows on eBay they haven't paid and they can't leave me bad feedback.
