I picked these up recently in an ebay lot thinking they were Penn Line, but they are cardstock and wood, so I'm not sure of the manufacturer. I like the fact that these are hand lettered. I don't think I could do that. I really like it though. I'm guessing they are from the 1940's or early 1950's back when custom decals weren't even available.

I plan to touch up the paint on the roofs and add new couplers and trucks, but I'm leaving the sides alone.

Picked this up at a recent train show. Mantua old-time B&O caboose. Love the look of this one for some reason and it rolls like a Hot Wheels car

Nice condition is the key phrase for these cars. The white paint on the logo is blistered on many of these.

Looking at historical artifacts like those old passenger cars is a treat. On the other hand, I'm having so much fun since I figured out how to post photos that I had to post this photo of an old stock car I made from an old Marx 0-27 stock car that I brush painted and decaled with some decals I had laying around.

Thanks, L&N, or is it "Jerry": That car was running around on my layout for several years in an ugly brown until one day I just decided to do something about it. By rattle-canning it with Krylon flat black, I took care of the spaces between the boards. A Walmat Acrylic brown shade took car of the roof and rust spots. I then used Polyscale Santa Fe Red for the lower sides and Walmart Acrylic white for the upper sides. Several S scale compatriots were sure to pont out that I had the colors reversed, that the white should have been on the lower sides, where lime would have killed the livestock odor on the protoype, so I decided that this would be a double-deck car for hogs and sheep. That way, the lower deck could be hosed down. I worked in a yard where they cleaned stock cars on a track. One time, when I was a new hire, we unloaded a carload of sheep in the middle of the night. The station agent had tuned on a water hose and a small trickle of water was flowing across the end of the ramp. Those sheep would not cross that water, and we had to unload them one at a time. When I got back on the engine, I mentioned the smell of sheep. The engineer said he would rather smell one sheep rather than the whole carload, like I did!

Anyway, my car is a regular sight on the K&W (KEOKUK & WESTERN) branchline remnant local on my railroad that goes out one day and comes back the next.

The paint on that stock car does make it look real Bob. Like the way the white near the top has been weathered and the lettering is real nice.

Working at the train shop has bennies! I have several HO Lionel helicopter cars, but no helicopters, my shop got in some O gauge heli's and I thought they were the same. I took my flat in on Sunday to see, and nope, not the same, the O gauge has 3 teeth on the spinner, and my car has 4. I remember the shop had a drawer in the back with O gauge helicopter parts, so I went back to pick out a used chopper to trial-fit anyway, and while digging through the drawer, I found this smaller red one! IT has 4 teeth on the spinner hub, so it's the HO version. Hidden down in the bottom,I'd missed it a few days earlier when I looked through the drawer. These babies are hard to find! I've seen the HO car sell mint for over $100 on Ebay. He had 25 marked on it, I paid more, but to get a whole, working HO heli car was worth it to me. Tail rotor is broken, but some super-glue will fix that. I'm a happy camper this week.

Sure brings back memories - I never had a helicopter car but my first Lionel O set had a 'satellite' car that was about the same thing - it had (of course) a satellite instead of a helicopter. There were two solar collectors that were curved like a propeller, and it would take right off when released man I wish I still had that set! It also had a Minuteman Missile Launching box car, pull a lever and the top would open up, the missile launcher would raise and then it would fire, bringing sure destruction to the Communist invaders.

I bought one of those Domino Sugar hoppers myself -- unfortunately, it had that blistering problem -- as seen in the above photograph. Luckily, I didn't pay that much for it. It's a shame, it would have been a nice railcar on my layout.
So I'll probably scrap it for parts and recycling. One thing though, does anyone know why the hatches on top are not the same all the way across?

I'm still on my 19th Century S scale kick. Hee is an AF Franklin car I picked up on Ebay a few days ago. I replaced the tinplate trucks with scale trucks and put Walther's couplers on it. It still needs some work, but if anybody ever comes out with a 19th Century S scale locomotive, I'm ready!

Note the "potbelly stove" in the baggage compartment

Found myself a very old C&NW quad hopper recently, and it just looks so neat like it is that I haven't gotten myself to start fixing it up yet. All wood, solid cast-metal varney trucks, and it's a transition car! A baker coupler on one end and the bracket for a mantua coupler on the other. Kinda amazing the lettering has survived this long, it looks to me to be from the late 40's or 50's. No idea who made it.

Those old coaches are like pieces of the "True Cross." Quite amazing. I have seen one like it that I can date to about 1973 in our local model train club. As for that Domino Sugar car: that is one awesome piece! Where in the world did you find that one???

There is a pretty good reason for the different hatch types. Items like sugar or sand produce a ton of dust when thrown around. Loading these items through the round hatch provides better dust control. The dust created could also be suctioned off through another of the round ports. Some common items can become an explosive hazard when in dust form.

Well, seeing this thread dug back up, I might as well give an update on my wooden hopper. I'm certain now that it was scratchbuilt, I've replaced all the missing and broken bits with matching styrene rod, I'll have to install new trucks and spruce up the paint in a few spots, maybe install some stirrups and a brakewheel... but I'm really tempted to keep the Baker and Mantua couplers and just make transition bogies to deal with it, just for the fun of seeing them still operate.

Now if only I could find where I PUT the damn thing...
