Don't have engine up and running yet to test it but hooked up transformer to track and I don't even get a hum? Shouldn't I at least hear something or are these transformers silent?

Thanks,

Most transformers are silent. I usually use a 9v battery for testing, no wires.

Then before investing in another transformer I guess it should wait and see if I can power on one the engines when it gets here or try the battery test.

Robb,
If you are going to work on electric trains, I suggest you invest in a multimeter. You can buy them for under $6.00 at harbor freight or under $10 at Walmart. Better ones can be found at Lowes Home improvement for under $25.

Most are silent if they are GOOD transformers, some of the cheaper ones will hum. They will heat up some, though. to test, get any flashlight bulb, and you can use the low voltage range to test to see if it's even working ( who DOESN'T have a flashlight around? ). 1.5 to 3 volt bulb will work as a simple test light for it, to see if voltage is present at all.
