All broken couplers removed no problems. Now I just need to find some horn hook couplers to replace the broken ones. Any ideas? I'm thinking just buying some old rolling stock for parts and use those couplers?

Heck with it, I have a bin of 'em to get rid of. What exactly kind of horn-hooks do you need? I'd be happy to mail you a couple pairs if postage is an issue for anyone.

And it's advisable to get those 10 posts, most trades are done by PM (so everyone doesn't read your address and stuff).

They should look something like this:

There's a LOT of little variations on couplers like this from various manufacturers... Most with the basic shape shown above *should* fit a Tyco.

Good examples of the ones that won't fit a Tyco! Except of course for the GG1...those were much longer.

Model Power couplers on the carded blister pack with four couplers runs about $4.99 at the local hobby shop. They are the same as the Tyco horn hooks.

I can probably give you the ones off of my W&A passenger cars, if they will work. I also have some from some Bachmann and AHM cars, as well. I want to keep some to try making magnetic X2F's as an experiment for S scale. These aren't bad couplers, and work well. Uncouplers are easy to make with fine piano wire. I am working with magnetic uncoupling for HO, and will post the results, with photos, if possible.

I've been using the couplers pictured above that DaCheez pictured. They work ok. The arm coming off the back of the coupler where the hole is I've clipped off and it fit pretty well and has worked. I have no idea why that arm is there but when I clipped it of it fit.

The arm... you mean the plastic tail spring? If you cut that off, the coupler isn't going to have any spring action.

You probably have one of the early Red Box units with the smaller coupler pockets. The coupler that fits those engines is the same as the one I pictured above, but with the tail cut off...but it sounds like you already figured that out! Those coupler pockets had a microscopic piece of wire wrapped around the rivet. One end of the wire touched the outer side of the pocket, the other end was bent upwards to press on the coupler giving it the springy-ness. There are various ways to give the coupler it's springy action, it just takes some creativity and patience...

I didn't know older Tyco didn't use plastic springs, but most manufacturers had some kind of separate spring back then. I have a box of those coupler hair springs made by Perfect... they ought to fit Tyco coupler boxes.

Neither did I until I had to change one...and what a pain they are! Are these hair springs you speak of still made today or is it old stock you have?

Cheez, they are very old stock. I pulled them out of a junk box for pennies. And yes, they are a nuisance to work with. I wonder who first came up with the idea of an integrated plastic spring.

It had to be a significant savings to the manufacturers in terms of manufacturing, inventory, and labor.
