Hello everyone. My name is Michael and I must say that I am amazed by the wealth of knowledge on this board and have enjoyed reading your posts. It's naturally time for me to join. I am a conductor at Amtrak in Michigan-Chicago. I loved trains since I was 2. With the advent of Internet photo archives, web forums, expensive model trains, and an overall sense by many that he who has the most trains wins (pictures or models) along with working on trains and realizing the things that can happen around trains when people are careless really killed the enjoyment of something that had meant so much to me. I built a layout with some proto and atlas equipment and I just felt like I was wasting my money and couldn't find enjoyment. So I was at a train show recently looking for some train cars and I came across a Penn Central TYCO 4301 for $7 with handrails...I marveled at it for a moment as I loved the old TYCO alco growing up and then moved on. I purchased an Atlas car or two and came home and later regretted not buying the Penn Central engine. My friend said dude its a stupid toy, your proto engines are better. The more I thought about it the more I got frustrated with myself..at what point did toy trains get so serious that you had to have sound and woodland scenics...what happened to a felt covered table with plastic accesories and interesting brightly painted cars for Jello, starkist, shell oil, and smiling baldwin sharks and Alcos. Since when did it become so cool to have 5 black painted NS gp60s pulling empty well cars? I'm not against prototype modelers and their work is outsatanding but I do believe that one must find enjoyment in something otherwise they should persu something else. And so, I ripped up my ballast, traded my protos and bought lots of junk. Old broken TYCO junk. Made myself a parts kit with motors and drives and wheels and sold off the shells that were scrathed or damaged. I was very lucky to find online an in the box Penn Central 4301 with mantua drive! And so a return to my 1980s childhood began and it brings me more enjoyment than any expensive loco could bring. I want to collect the older pieces as well and got a 1959 era Mantua shark in the Union Pacific Paint. I hope to enjoy these trains for years and they do bring back great memories. Now you know how I got back into tyco. A little more about me, I am a licensed stationary engineer and have worked on old steam heating boilers, I used to fire coal on a museum steam train and although I'm only 28 I consider myself a retired church organist. I played classical and theater pipe organ and still enjoy the instrument but do not wish to keep It up. Having worked in music made it real hard to get a railroad job as nobody thought it was the right experience...took me 10 years of straight applying so never give up on your dreams! I also enjoy photographing streetcars and city buses and love Detroit.. More than the tigers, more than the wings, more than the crime...we have a beautiful and sometimes gritty industrial personality and a 300 plus year history that is so rich. I'm proud to live in Michigan and consider myself a Detroiter having lived there. And we have Canada right across the river! I just need to find a Canadiana TyCo engine over there one of these days! So that's it and hello to everyone. Mike

Mike,
It was a big move, undoing all that previous model railroading, and that takes some audacity, but what's the purpose of model railroading? It's the same purpose as any hobby: recreation. If you do the thing that gives you something to which to look forward during the hum-drum parts of life, and it refreshes your mind during and after, that's a hobby! Congratulations for seeing the reason behind the reason and going for it.
There! You've just had your sanity affirmed by someone who talks about shingling dogs with pancakes.

Haha! Thanks. I shoulda known that was a Challenger! For Some doling reason I only thought there was the 1 operational challenger preserved. I'm an east coast guy. I need to study up on western roads. My UP user name refers to a TYCO shark. I grew up with chessie / csx and Conrail.

Welcome, Mike. I finally ditched the ribbit counting myself because I realized that I preferred working on 'em to running 'em anyway, and that my tastes run more toward the vintage. Of course I admire the skill & dedication of prototypical layouts; more power to them (though like you I'll never understand those who expend that much cash and effort just to run doublestack trains. )

Hi, Mike, glad you're aboard, you'll go far with that attitude here. :) I like the older vintage ( and toy classified ) as much as I like prototypical realism. I just hadn't been able to afford the "realism" much until my inheritance last year. I just bought a N&W J steam engine from BLI for $200, with sound and DCC. But I love the old Mantua dock siders, saddle tankers, small hustler diesels, and others that may not fit a realist operating scheme in real life. But why do Lionel 0-gaugers get to be the ONLY ones who enjoy "toy" trains? Or AF guys for that matter? We HO'ers can certainly pick from a variety of stock out there that was not necessarily realistic or operated in a less-than-prototypical environment. NOthing wrong with a sheet of grass on plywood, some flashy operating accessories, and a few bells and whistles to go along with all that. I'm actually designing a modular module for HO, that I can have about a 1' square panel with a Tyco, Bachmann, or Life-Like accessory on it, and fit 3 or 4 to a standard HO train module of 2 x 4, and put a few together, could have 8 or 12 different accessories operating on a spur line at train shows. The design is still in the works, but I'm tired of the rather boring static scenery, some active pieces that the train can interact with is more what I want to see. And apparently some of my club members do, too. One has a working carnival, another a UFO crash scene, another an airport with flashing lights. I think putting the vintage "toy" HO accessories out there to use and show off will be awesome. Time will tell.
Anyway, glad you're with us, show us some of your stuff, we love pictures here. Downsize them to a standard 800 x 640 or 1280 x 800 is a good idea, too large will cause loading problems. Hope to see more of your posts soon.

Welcome aboard Mike. I also was a ribbit counter in my early years but now I just like running them and kitbashing and building "what-ifs"... whatever strikes my mood. I look forward to your posts and even though this is a model forum, I wouldn't mind seeing one or two of your streetcar photos.

Welcome aboard, Mike. I was a locomotive engineer until I retired in 2001, and worked on 7 different railroads, if you count the IC twice. I never thought I would want to retire, but I've never looked back - it was interfering with my modeling activity, like my wife does when she threatens to clean my basement
