So my wife say's to me this past Saturday, hey lets go check out some yard sale's.
As usual I balked at the idea then gave in...Glad I did.....
Wouldn't you know it on the 2nd.last place we stopped this lady had a few HO Item's up for grab's.
Nothing really to my liking until I spied the last box on the table.
How lucky can 1 guy get,Here it is a Rivarossi 2-8-4 Nickle Plate Road loco and tender still in the original box from the late 60's I believe but not sure.
Now for the price, Ya ready for this one...... $10.00 ....can you say scarf......which I did abruptly.Got the unit home gave it a thorough cleaning and lube job and she run's just great.
So here she is on the layout...

Mike,
Sounds like your taking a page from my book! GREAT FIND tho!!!!

Feast your eyes....

Scary part of this one? Its missing its tender, is flywheel drive Rossi, and will pull yer house.... at that SAME Yard sale, A BUCK! The guy there told me it was missing parts, (I don't care) and that he didn't know if it ran it hasn't been run in 10 years) again, I didn't care.....brought home, to the shop we went on the test track, Runs GREAT! I will probably be keeping this one, in the factory condition, AFTER I replace the few missing parts, including the tender, but this one, is on the back burner for now!

Sorry man maybe next time! I am a fan of the "Yellowstone" locomotives, even tho the Cab Forwards is a "backwards" Yellowstone, Which a Cab Forwards, is a 4-8-8-2, and the actually Yellowstone is a 2-8-8-4......This one is going to remain as a factory unit, reconditioned and will be used to go with my "Yellowstone" fleet......

Guys, I have this saying. I fall right in the poop and come ut smelling like a rose. and sadly its true, I do it more then I say too! And at times like this one for instance, I literally TRIED to push harder to hit the poop harder and it still didn't help!!!!! All in all, I don't find this stuff all the time, but when I do. I spend da money my friends!

Thing is, its a matter of being in the right place at the right time, I know what its like to be literally a second to late.......as I watched a guy walk away a few weeks ago with an tire train set, seen where it was and then seen what he paid for the WHOLE box! $5.00 and it took 3 PEOPLE to carry it away! It was stacked right full, heaping full, I about craped my pants! And sadly, if I had not "said one extra word" to the last person I bought from to say Thanks instead of "Thank you" that whole box, would have been mine!

THATS scary! I to this day would have LOVED to have seen what was in that box! BUT the next table had a sign, "Whole box of HO trains $5" and I seen the track and what looked like a bridge, and possibly some sort of freight cars sticking out over the taped up box flaps.......And when I say "track" I KNOW there was at least one scissors crossover in it, and God only knows how much 3 foot sections of flex track!

Needless to say, I'm still kicking myself over that one.....

All because I had to say "thank you".....

John,

At least you lost out because you were being nice. Think of the guilt feeling if you'd lost out by being mean.

That's a really nice model of a great-looking engine. July before last, I had the privilege of seeing one of the prototype Berkshires run. They're a real sight, prototype or scale!

John,

I've got a 60's Pere Marquette close to NIB (I had to replace the box foam and the torn cello with acrylic sheet), so I'm not desperate for one. For $10, tho, I certainly would have jumped on it.

Can't say as how I've found any vintage trains like THAT at a yard sale yet! <envious>. I've picked up a few pieces here and there, but nothing like that. Great grab! Never know what will turn up at a YS. I still find great stuff at train shows in junk boxes and under tables, it's all in how and where you look. Several small shows I go to are far better than the huge ones, as they don't get the attendance, so don't get picked over as much. I've gotten far more interesting stuff at smaller shows than the huge city shows. Not to say I've NOT gotten awesome stuff ( Eldon steam engine for $5 at Timonium a year ago? ), but sometimes the good stuff is at smaller venues. I've gotten some great stuff through Craigslist, too. Yard sales, no big train scores yet. Still waiting on that to happen. Anyway, great locomotive you got.

I wonder how much of those treasures I passed up because I was only there to "look". Nonetheless, I don't think I've ever seen train stuff at a garage sale, especially since I've been watching. Same goes for Goodwill, but I can't say for Salvation Army. My modus operandi iis that if I fall into a bucket of ****, I still smell that way when I come out! Some guys just live right, I guess.

Nice locomotives, though. I remember seeing them in ads in MR and RMC in the "good 'ol days"

One of the best train shows I've been to for stuff (not having layouts or displays) was at the Winston-Salem Fairgrounds Agriculture building. The show was hosted by a local club, which I think was Southbound Train Modelers. Tiny building, packed with vendors. Lots of interesting items, oddball things, some rare-some not.
Best show of the year (in North Carolina ) is usually the Neuse River Valley Model Club show. There is a very large modular layout and a few smaller ones. Many vendors, some with expensive stuff , some with "bargain" items.

If anyone comes across a Rivarossi 2-10-2 for parts, let me know, I need the drive train. I have a nice loco, no motor, driveshafts, or angle drive.
