Interesting story Ben! As usual the media has dramatized and exaggerated the story. Hitting the side of a train going by is not as serious as the train striking the car. The damage on the Mercedes is no worse than if it was involved in an intersection wreck with another car. It's likely the train she hit was not traveling very fast and for certain the second train was not. Fun stuff here!

They already did in the story. "The car was pinned under the train". REALLY? What, the front bumper facia? Then they write, "despite the impacts the woman suffered only a broken arm. The vehicle sustained heavy damage... She's very lucky to be with us" again, Really?? The passenger compartment on the car is very intact and the impacts were not that hard. I've repaired wrecked cars for years and I understand what happens to cars & passengers in wrecks of all kinds... The media specializes in exaggerated drama & bad news...

Walt, your right tho.....I too have seen much worse wrecks!!!! I seen a Ford Explore.. EXPLODE in the rain, and left the entire front end, all the way to the front seats in the road. all from hitting a guard rail at about 70 MPH......WHY? It Hydroplaned! I watched it as it happened, on a highway as it was headed south on a straight away, I was headed north.....A LOT slower tho as the speed limit in that area was 55, and at the time, I had to set an example as I was working for the state as a maintenance man for the Liquor Commission. The only reason I seen it from start to finish, I actually got to see the Explorer "stop" from the whole thing!
Have to say tho, it was something out of the movies tho!!!! My Co-worker that was with me also seen it.....He says the same thing...BUT, I'm sure it ruined that guys day!

I'll agree that the news media blows things way out of proportion or skews stories for appeal. But, I will say that second hit, looked fairly harsh. 0-45 mph in .2 seconds. Or thereabouts.
Anyway, what is the cop trying to do? Looks like he is trying to break out the back window? Why not try to open the passenger door or break out that window (if the door is locked)?

After umpteen hours I finally got the video to play on my iPhone. I had only judged by the still picture until now. The second hit was a bit harder than I thought it would have been. However if you mute the sound and watch the trains they really aren't moving fast. The loud air horn (like a police siren) tricks your mind thinking something is really moving quick... I don't believe a car can take a 45 MPH hit from a train and be so forgiving. I used to know the train speed / stopping times but I don't remember anymore. Operation Lifesaver states a train going 55 MPH takes over a mile to stop. A nieghbor of ours drove trains and said he had hit 6 cars and all were fatal .

I did a little bit of cipherin'.
It's really difficult to time the events. But, here's what I found:
The lady was traveling at an average speed of 53 to 60 mph. She was probably going much faster when she went in front of the patrol car and there was a lot of tire smoke before she hit the train. So, she did slow down some. Ex: If she was doing 80 mph at the intersection and hit the train at 40 mph, the average speed is 60 mph.
Next, the second train was traveling at 33 to 38 mph~.
I realize there is some margin for error. But, it was interesting to analyze to incident.
