Tomorrow we will place an offer on a nice home that a realtor showed us hours ago. I was in shock to find that this home had a basement that was not mentioned on the printed info sheet. After seeing the two car attached garage and the other separate garage, my curiosity was directed towards the basement. I opened the basement door and peered down at what looked to be a nice clean floor at the bottom of the stairs. As I go down I can then tell that I am in a super nice, spotless, Bone dry, 25X56 unobstucted basement ! Was I excited! Plenty of room to set up my 8X20 (or larger) train / slot car layout. My mind has been in the hobby business tonight for certain

Nice unexpected gift! How could they NOT list a basement? Unfinished? Who cares?! AND it has two garages? <drool> Awesome. I hope it works out for you, Walt.

Jerry, Thank you! basement was listed on page 2, and I had only briefly saw the front page. Really excited about the whole place. Will start building the layout table once deal is solidified. MicroBen... Things change so work hard to make those changes happen . MyTyco, Thank you! Will enjoy sharing photos and short clips...

One suggestion - don't try to fill the basement with layout; that's the quickest way tp discouragement and disappointment for most of us, since we're not made of sufficient money or time to build or maintain such a monstrosity. Don't ask me how I know this!

The most I would do is add 4 feet of length to 8X24.. I have other old toys to display in other areas of the basement. Wanna keep displays separated & neat. I hate cludder...

If you're going to do a big basement layout, best to do a peninsula layout that wraps around, with like 2 foot wide benchwork you can throw basic scenery on fairly quick and then take your time going through. If you plan carefully you can get the main loop up and running and have some action, then come back and cut switches and so forth in as you go.
In fact, you can even straight rail through where a peninsula would be, and then come back later and add it, as long as you leave enough room for it to open out to at least 4" on the end for the turnback curve.

Thank you Lvrr325. I know those layouts are common & easy to work on. But a few years ago I made up plans for a large layout that I know that will be harder to work on. 8 feet wide & 20 long. The mostly 4 lane slot car track demands a bit of space, along with a lot of railroad!

I would spread that to like 12 feet wide and run an aisle up the middle.

My SHABBONA RR focuses on the yards at each end with a single track main line meandering around the basement to connect them. I was working under the KISS ( K eep I t Simple, S tupid), but that went out the window as my fertile mind went into overtime. As a result, it is S till under construction, and now I've found this new aversion and no place to build it. But at least my Bachmann 4-4-0 now runs under its own power.

My layout will not accept an aisle up the middle, and I would be unsatisfied with that type of set up...

I agree with you there, walt I am tired of this "layout along the walls" concept YUCK!! I wants a bigger than 4X8 layout against the wall & layout takes up more than 3/4 the room

Yeah, Ben... I can do my 8 X20 or 24 on one end of this basement and keep it neat & clean. Plus having tons of room left over. Another display I have is a 1958 Superior Gas Station (tin) with all it's original cars and pieces. Plus a nice regular wheels Matchbox collection, and more...

Bob (did I spell that backwards?), Are you originally from northern Illinois? Shabbona was the name of an Indian chief who once averted a war, here. Local history fondly remembers him and there's a lake and a town named after him.

Shaggy:
That was Chief Shabbona (pronounced SHA'buh naw) He showed more common sense and discipline than the white men who called him a "savage". After they stole everything he had and weren't about to give it back, they decided to name a town after him.
My railroad is pronounced Shu BON' nah, and is basedon an old Rock Island line in Southeast Iowa that ran between Keokuk and Des Moines, IA (RIP, 1980). It is a light density, secondary main line concept that works perfect for me, a single operator most of the time. Trains run in a sequence to avoid having to adhere to a timetable schedule. Of course, on the Yahoo S scale group, I am the unwanted fly at a picnic, especially because of my aversion to DCC and the latest in Oriental thievery that everybody has to have to survive. However, I run trains, while they fiddle with their DCC. Whatever floats your boat, I guess.

UPDATE, The home deal is moving in the right direction as we have settled on a price and moving forward. Gettin a little excited now. I just counted my Tyco & Life-like lighted poles, signs and billboards with lights...I have at least 224. Waiting to see what a 20 foot long 4 lane slot car straight looks like with neatly placed Tyco Fluorescent light poles on both sides... UPDATE ON THE UPDATE; Just received call, the home deal has went thru for us! Now I am excited!!

Cool setup, Walt. Congrats.
Now you need a fleet of AFX Big Rigs to haul all those trailers.

. One of my favorite views, heading to the basement. Trying to avoid being like a 12 year old, I have put getting moved in first.
Yesterday I mentioned to my wife while driving, that I am excited about getting my train layout started. She replied, "I am too, but I'm afraid I won't ever get to see you again"...

Funny I think I've heard my wife say those same words, only in the present tense "I never see you!"
Maybe we can start a support group for them
