Found this interesting full-page ad in the December 1988 Model Railroader...any of those locos in the heap seem odd or unusual???

Kinda mean-spirited of Mantua to be claiming these engines are "destined to last fewer than ten hours" when the pile is mostly home to Mantua-relative TYCO locos. [B)]

Nice Ad Mantua,
Tony, check out that SP GP20 at the middle/top of the page.
I don't think i've seen one painted like that.

Yep - that SP Popsicle/Daylight GP20 is definitely a strange one.

I see a RioGrande SD24 peeking up there... of course the NYC shark is also somewhat uncommon but obvious in the ad. Looks like a Bachmann or two thrown in for good measure.

Hmm. 10 hours? I'd say that was fairly accurate given the "typical" use for those engines in those days. And by 1988 we can safely say that Tyco just didn't give a rip about trains anymore. I guess Mantua was desperate to shake the link though. Still pretty poor taste... and yet... "it's funny (sad) 'cuz it's true..."

A Large pile of Tyco engines and one little Athearn motor in the lower right side. [:D]

From my count, it looks like Bachmann got nailed with just the one Santa Fe GP-40 sitting in the lower right corner.

There's also a replacement Yugoslovian-made Rock Island F-9A in there too...just above the switcher in the middle of the page. Kinda early for it to be showing itself...must have been new at the time.

Oddly Mantua shot themselves too, that switcher on its side in the middle bottom is a Mantua model.

And yeah, that Southern Pacific Daylight GP-20 had my eyes popping outta my head! I thought, OH NO! did TYCO make one of those?!? It does carry roadnumber 5628. I've checked my Mantua catalogs and I do see that Mantua did in fact offer a Southern Pacific GP-20 around 1980. No picture in the Mantua catalog for it, so I can't say for certain that Mantua is the maker that GP-20...but I would say it probably was them.

Could you imagine a great puzzle this would make? I mean, make a lemon smoothie outta the lemons, eh?
BTW, 2 Alco Santa Fe Centuries, 2 EMD Santa Fe F-9's, an EMD Santa Fe GP-20 between Chessie and Chattanooga, and one more EMD Santa Fe GP 38 or GP 40 just below Chessie... New York crashing(bad Mantua!), two Durango's... a Silver Streak, Burlington Northern Geep, plenty of those "motor in the tender" loco's, the USA Express C-430, a mysterious SD-24(noted the torpedo brake cylinders) just above the Chattanooga,
that TYCO "face-off" O-6-O, Rock Island F, that popcicle Southern Pacific, and finally that little 0-4-0 diesel switcher down front with added bell, hand-railing, fire-man sunshade, and rear light...

...if only they panned back with a wider lense... yeah, that's a pretty bad way to say you're better than them. Also, imagine how they were able to scrounge up all those units, and think how much people could use all those engines...
But, all in all... I think that the tender behind the GN loco is too long.
By the way... today's engines last longer than Mantua would want to admit. Someone had to buy all those engines, otherwise, it would be slander on Mantua's part for mud-slinging... rant, rant, rant...

...still, a good idea for a puzzle, don't you think? Or, like a game of "Pick-up Sticks"?

I'm outta whine...

John
p.s.... oop's, you did say 1988 ad. I don't see any Athearn units.

I don't have a one track mind. It depends on the turn-out.
"I love your catenary!"
Is that a power-trip or just another pick-up line?

Tony,
Look at the loco on the right side, between the Chessie F unit and the Chattanooga tender. Is that A red and silver SF GP20? If so, you now have photographic proof that it does/did exist! It sure looks like one to me.

The red and silver Santa Fe GP-20 is known to exist and is common. It's introduced in '77 or '78 and remains until the GP-20's disappear in the early '90s.

The blue and yellow Santa Fe GP-20 in freight warbonnet scheme is the odd duck, we've yet to be able to confirm.

"a mysterious SD-24(noted the torpedo brake cylinders) just above the Chattanooga,"

Believe that's a TYCO Rio Grande SD-24. The cab number is 5210 and it has the D&RGW stripes up its nose.

Tony,
Sorry about that! I don't know why, but for some reason I thought it was the red and silver that was not known to exist. I guess that's what happens when a non-tyco type tries to get involved with tyco stuff.

...and thars da bolt o'lightnin'

my brain storm... Someone copy and paste the pile onto some heavy paper and attach it to some card stock and jigsaw a puzzle. Seein's how Mantua wants to be recognized against these "cheapy" locomotives, there shouldn't be any copyright laws... oh, make sure to omit the GN portion of the picture...
maybe add a slogan:
"When It Takes A Pile Of Model Trains To Fill Your Life,
It Makes A World Of A Difference...
Only Smaller"

OR

Is the add talking about 10 scale hours? [:(]

Has anyone run their Tycos for hours on end? I only run mine for 15 to 20 minutes continuously and then switch engines. Surely no one takes that 10 hour claim seriously.

... HEY, Tony...

Was this ad first published in Color?

If not, then Mantua can diminish the impact of these gold nuggets piled up.

If this ad was in full color, Mantua's painted locomotive wouldn't be able to measure up to the shiney heap behind it. It would be like a pipsqueek surfer on the beach posing with his board, while a tidal wave was approaching.

That is the odd and unusual key in this picture. [B)] [^]

John

p.s.
I got it... the "Mastercard" commercial you will never see...

"A CHILDHOOD WITH MODEL TRAINS...

PRICELESS!"

[^]
huh, they also forgot to make red the color around Rocky on the tender. Yes, the color would have overpowered and dissolved the lonely remarks Mantua tried to uphold.
>>>So, ah... what about the puzzle idea?<<<

The ad is reproduced here just as it appeared in the magazine...it is black and white with only the MANTUA name in color as you see in the scan. Color would have been awesome.

I think that this ad was a safe way to not incure any legal problems by using models that the average joe would not know were Tyco and tied in with Mantua thus making the claim seem strong.

Or maybe it was an attempt to show that Mantua had upgraded their product line. Kinda like saying "here's the crap we used to make and now are new stuff is WAAAAY better!!"
