While at my Train shop job today, I was going through the shop box of junkers to fix and sell, and picked out this Varney diesel ( F3 ? ), the frame was cracking, so I wanted to get the body shell off before it cracked it. I pried gently, and the frame buckled in the back coming out, although it still had the attaching points to the shell and drivetrain intact. I took it apart, the wires were loose on the power truck pick-ups so I soldered them back on, cleaned up the armature plates and removed the gunk between them, and after a bit, it fired up and moved. I had to take the gear off the axle gearbox before the motor would really move. I oiled both bearings, and it sings pretty now. The gearbox is sluggish, though, so the grease is probably dried up.
Anyway, it has an intact tube driveshaft, and I thought I could make those. I found some 1/4" diameter tubing #228 by Evergreen Scale Models at the nearby hobby shop from the train store, white, which looks to be exactly the same diameter and thickness of the original driveshaft. I will attempt to make some tonight, easy job. Easier than the Marx motor commutator pcb I am going to try to make! Anyway, I thought that someone had posted somewhere that they needed a driveshaft for their Varney diesel. If this is the same one, I will be glad to make extra's for anyone that needs them, I got 3 feet worth of the tubing, the original is 1.75 inches long and clear. These will be white.
