| Unfortunately our lottery offers "false hope" to poor people. The odds of winning a big lotto is slim. You actually have a better chance of getting struck by lightning 6 times and surviving each time... Save your dollars...

Walt, Man you burst my bubble, I have been counting on the lotto so I could retire! I guess I will have to count on the Social Security system. That system may be a bigger gamble than the LOTTO!

You're exactly right Walt. Around here, the buzzwords are "education" and "lower taxes" I haven't seen either improving from my tax-paying point of view

Actually, there ARE ways to increase your odds of winning...but you have to stick with it. I did it a couple of times running lotto office pools 20 years ago, and managed to win some money to cover the original pool money. Basically, if you look at all lottery numbers, you'll see that A) some numbers repeat more frequently, and B) that over a 4 or 5 number draw, few numbers repeat. So if you use some of the repeating numbers, and then don't use numbers from the last 4 or 5 draws, you've eliminated about 20 numbers. That leaves about 25-35 depending on the state. Does it help? I'd say yes. Are the odds STILL long? Yes, they are. But if you let the machine pick, in Virginia frequently the machine will repeat number picks on the same multi-number ticket, so you're losing valuable spread across the numbers. Not so good. It takes some work to handpick numbers, but when you're buying 100 numbers, you can leave out numbers from the last 4-5 draws, and shuffle combinations around to maybe hit 3 or 4 if you're lucky. It works, but you need LOTS of available numbers to play, and that only works if you are in a pool, or want to spend $100 of your own money ( not so good choice )...and if the numbers fall in your favor. Still, it's possible. Can't really do it with 2 or 3 numbers, but if you eliminate numbers from previous draws as odds are they won't get repicked, and then hand-pick your numbers, you do have a slightly better chance of hitting SOME numbers.
<Whew> All that said, if I hit a big lottery? I'd look into buying a small abandoned train line, or a small 20-30 ton diesel. Well, both actually. LOL I'd also like to start a Machine Shop club, where instead of athletic equipment for exercising, you'd have metal and wood working machines where people could come in and use them. Maybe hire retired guys to come in and manage the place, give people training, etc. Ok, not give, charge for. LOL! I'd also have an AMC Gremlin, Pacer, and Hornet retirement farm, where I could save the funkiest of cars from scrapyards. My driveway already looks like that now. I just don't have the money to "save" their condition any better at the moment. Sigh. And Ben? You might have to pay to use those legacy roadnames and paint schemes, railroads are touchy about their proprietary rights. Just sayin'.
Final say on lotteries? While the odds are long, SOMEONE wins every few weeks or months. For that person or persons, it was worth the small investment. And next time, it could be ME...which is what keeps most people going back to play. I don't dump $20 on tickets every day, rarely at all. Usually I wait until the pot gets high, then I spend up to $5. BIG spender here! I figure if I am gonna win, I'd rather win 200 million than the base 12 million after someone collects the huge jackpot. Doesn't increase my odds of winning any, but if I DO win, I'll be richer. and have wasted LESS money. That's my theory and I'm stickin' to it. And if I DO win, I'll make sure every Tyco Forum member gets a signed copy of my lotto ticket... That'll raise some steam pressure! And hey, maybe I'll run my OWN lottery...take every Tyco forum member's name, put it in a container ( how many members, a few thousand? ), and draw out some names and give away some cash. The odds will be MUCH lower then of not winning! LOL. ANd it wont' cost members a $1, I'll just do it from the bottom of my 1% heart. Heh heh heh !

Gambling is one thing if you just bet a couple of bucks on a horse to make the race interesting or something like that. A gamble like the lottery where the whole point is to glom onto someone else's money while he tries to do the same with yours and all with no value added strikes me as coveting among consenting adults. Coveting is something the creator of the universe advises strongly against, so I take another approach.
I joined a train museum and get to run big trains and people call it by the noble and altruistic-sounding name of volunteering. The great part is that I don't have to bear the expense of owning the thing. I do clean boiler flues, but I'd have to do that if I owned the train, too.
As for the little trains, this board is full of people who've figured out how to get them on the cheap.

There's 1500 new lotto millionaires a year. Sounds good till ya figure that there is over 300 million people in the USA. Just a tiny percentage compared. Then add the lottery odds against you that leaves the lightning strike stats. The OFFICE POOLS leave a lot of big winners in grief. Almost always someone else in the office sues trying to claim they were a part of the pool. Many people are intertained by the idea of gambling on the lotto getting something for nothing... I believe these folks are called, "broke people"... Jrg1951. Our Social INsecurity system is pretty bad too . I hope have built some savings to go along with the SS... Good luck !

Walt, My reply was a shot at humor with some sarcasm for good measure. Your response is appreciated. I do play the Lotto on a regular basis. but in a very modest way.

I would at least like a SHOT at proving to GOD that I wouldn't turn into a degenerate myself.

Hehe, I don't have to play the lottery to play with that train. That's ALCO RSD4 #201, ex Kennecott Copper. It's at the museum I volunteer at.

My state has had the lottery for a few years, now. There really hasn't been any improvement in schools, they still raised taxes to pay for schools. And just recently a report came that said the state government has not been using the lottery money according to the original lottery agreement.
Who knew?!

If I won the lottery I could fill up the tank on my Ford Ranger pickup.
Help out some family members.
Help out some horse rescue groups.
Buy some nice .22 rifles and handguns.
Build an indoor shooting range.
Travel.
A couple of John-Deere tractors.
Oh yeah, maybe some train stuff..........
